Happy 1/2 Birthday to Weeble!

Magic Mood Jeep? - 16 Feb 2004 14:09 GMT That's right - this week Sir Weeble Wobblybottom (whose bottom is no longer wobbly at all) will be 6 months old. I found him on 8/22 of last year, and he was less than a week old, so our vet pinned his Birthday as being 8/18/03.
Does anyone know of any cat-friendly cake recipes (but yet still palatable for humans, i.e.. no mouse/fish flavor)? Actually, since he seems to want to taste everything we eat, just about any kind of cake I bake will do. He does like apples (the juicy Fuji apples are his fave), and last night he sampled some of DH ice cream (vanilla with orange sherbet) and seemed to like it, plus he's ate bread.... some steak, cheese, hamburger, any kind of gravy, and I've lost track of all the unusual things he sampled.
Do they make extra small party hats???? I'm afraid that the regular child-size party hats you find at the store will be to large for his poop-head (another one of his many nicknames).
And on a side note, his photos on Webshots have a combined total (of all three albums) viewing of over 70,000, and a combined total downloading of almost 800!!!!

3 large tart apples 1/2 c. sugar juice of 1 lemon 1 stick butter 1 c. light brown sugar 1. c. flour 1 prepared deep dish pie crust
Peel & slice apples and place in pie crust. Cover with white sugar and sprinkle all over with lemon juice. Cream butter with brown sugar and work in the flour. Crumble this mixture over the apples. Bake at 300F for 25 minutes.

Magic Mood Jeep? - 16 Feb 2004 15:39 GMT Scotch Apple Pie sounds nummy, but DH has this 'thing' for Jell-O 'poke-cakes' (bake a cake, preferable vanilla or 'plain', poke it with the handle of a wooden spoon or drinking straw all over, then pour liquid Jell-O over it (choose your fave flavor) and then refrigerate until Jell-O sets... top with whipped cream (instead of the regular sweet icing), serve and enjoy) and is MUCH easier to make - that and I already have a cake mix and Jell-O mix - so I think I'll go that route.

Hey! Thats just trifle without the custard!
And I *love* trifle!
Although at the moment, my craving is for stewed rhubarb and custard. Can't find rhubarb here anymore for love nor money - it used to be so popular everyone had some in their backyard - mostly whether they liked it or not! Now I can't even find it in the supermarket.

Hi Yowie,
I have found that some supermarkets carry it in the frozen section. I know what you mean about people not having it in their back yards anymore. My grandmother used to have 10 big plants of it in her garden. Actually, it is still there - maybe I will try to get a plant or 2 this summer. I remember going outside and pulling a couple stalks, sitting on the rock nearby and dipping the stalks into a cup of sugar I had brought along. YUM!

YUM! I used to do that, too! I mean dipping the stalk in a cup of sugar. I didn't know anyone who grew it in their yard. My mom never bought it, but my best friend always had some in the summer, and we'd walk around the neighborhood with our cups of sugar, eating the rhubarb. It was yummy! (Humorous aside: because I grew up in Massachusetts, I thought it was called "rubob", LOL!)
Speaking of rhubarb, here's a yummy and very easy recipe for rhubarb crisp. I apologize that I don't have the metric equivalents available at the moment.
Joyce
------------------ Rhubarb Crisp
4 cups (roughly 1-1.5 lb) rhubarb, cut into 1-2" pieces 1/2 teaspoon salt 2 cups sugar (more or less) 1/2 cup quick-cooking oats 1/2 cup flour 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (although I used closer to 1.5...) 1/3 cup butter or margarine (softened)
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Arrange rhubarb in ungreased baking dish (~8x8x2 inches), sprinkle with salt. In a bowl, mix together sugar, oats, flour, and cinnamon. Add in butter until mixture is crumbly, then dump/spread it over the rhubarb.
Bake until topping is golden-brown and rhubarb is tender, about 40-50 minutes.

Thanks for the recipe! Rhubarb is one of my favorites, but I seldom see it any more. My mother used to grow some in the back yard when we were kids -- it's a very easy plant to grow, it any of you want to do it but can't find fresh rhubarb in the groceries.

Too bad. :o( Would you be able to grow some at home? It should be pretty easy. Of course, it's too late for this year, since you are going into autumn down under, and rhubarb is best in spring. I'm lucky, the mother of a co-worker grows rhubarb and always gets too much of the stuff, so palms it off on relatives and friends, and her daughter brings some into work and I get my rhubarb fix for the year that way - for free!

I should be able to grow some as long as the Fluff-monster doesn't dig it back up. All I need is seeds or some other form of "starter". Does rhubarb like full sun, or is it a shade plant?

Rhubarb leaves contain oxalic acid so don't use the leaves, they can be hazardous to your health. You probably should grow rhubarb where the kitties can't get to it.

MY fave is white chocolate, and I don't let them have any of that Actually, I don't believe that "white chocolate" has any actual chocolate in it. It's just something white and sugary (and fatty), that sort of has the same consistency as milk chocolate, so maybe that's where the name came from. But I don't think the chemical in chocolate that's so harmful to cats and dogs is in the "white" version.
One suggestion: do you have to eat the same thing Weeble eats for his birthday? Maybe you could serve him something *really* cat friendly, like salmon pate, or lox. He'll love that, I'm sure! You don't have to eat it if you don't like it. You can still join the party eating something you like.
But he *must* wear a party hat. And you have to get photos!
Happy 1/2 B'day to Weeble!!

Magic Mood Jeep? - 17 Feb 2004 20:10 GMT I think I'm going to put a spin on the poke cake idea, and make poke cupcakes! I've got vanilla cake mix, muffin tins and just bought some of those paper cups you make cupcakes with, I'll just poke each one once and pour (with a spoon - it's be easier to control that way) a bit of Jell-O over each one. My husband likes to make orange poke cakes, that way they taste like the 'dreamsicles' (vanilla ice cream on a stick, coated with orange flavored popsicle), but I do have a few other flavors of Jell-O to choose from.
