I get regular promotional e-mails from Doctors Foster & Smith, and I
got one today that said they have a compounding pharmacy. They listed
several yummy flavors (liver, mmmm good) but what impresed me the
most, though I would imagine all meds can't be done this way, is that
you can get transdermal gels which can be absorbed through the skin.
What a blessing that would be! Mike is hard to pill; he takes his
valium without a big fuss because he likes the watermelon flavor our
TED compounded for us (yeah, Mike's weird) but the next time he has to
have something else, I am definitely going to look into this option.
This may be old news, but it was the first time I'd noticed the
compounding blurb, and I figured some here would be interested. I
have no idea whether they would ship outside the US; it didn't mention
it either way in the FAQ I saw.
Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Drs F&S, etc., just an
all-too-regular customer. :-)

Also, some human-oriented pharmacies do compounding. If the TED can
give you a prescription, the pharmacy can compound it - if there is a
human version of that drug. Since most medications are the same product
at a different strength, I doubt that would be a problem. However, my
local compounding pharmacy gave me a price estimate for making Benedryl
into a cat-friendly form that would have been about 3-4 times the cost
for the stuff off the shelf (that Brenna thinks tastes worse than
clavamox). Just FYI - according to Brenna, grape flavoring is bad, but
bubblegum is just nasty!

My Fireball gets his thyroid meds. compounded, I rub it in his ear. But they
can't compound his heart meds. I still have to pill him once a day, but can
rub his ear three times a day. I get it from a people pharmacy. And yes, it
is considerably more cost wise. But I couldn't take having to pill him three
times a day with multiple pills.
Head butts to all, Lisa.

I wonder what they're using for the absorptive vehicle? If its DMSO, your
pet will end up with garlic breath (and DMSO is the most common transdermal
vehicle)
