Weazel Ball Fun!

Zorin the Lynx - 09 Feb 2004 15:53 GMT So at the hamfest (amateur radio convention thing), this lady was selling "Weazel Balls", which are these motorized ball toys with a weasel-like fluffy thing attached via a nylon cord. When turned on, they roll about on the floor, the weasel-like thing flipping and looking like its chasing the ball.
"Perfect cat toy!", I thought. So I plunked down the $6 for it and brought it home, shoved in a AA battery, and let it loose on the floor.
The result was HILARIOUS. Lynxie didn't know what to make of it at first, but then he got close to it to try to smell it and it suddenly flipped in his direction and whapped him on the nose. He jumped back like four feet! He then stared at it and it flipped its way around into the hallway, where he went after it, again staying back a bit. Once again it rolled towards him, and he JUMPED right over it! Maybe two feet nearly straight into the air!
He then went and hid behind a wall and STARED at it as it did its thing, bumping into walls with the weasel-thing flipping around.
I expected him to run and pounce after it, but his expression of shock and the way he moved out of the way of the thing ended up being that much funnier.
I have a feeling he'll be bored of it before the first battery is fully discharged, though... }:)

Only now it is just the weasel. They separated him from the ball. The weasel is Oliver's favorite toy and we find him everywhere, including tucked into bed with us, in the shower, and hanging out on the cat's chair.
Isn't it amazing what you find at Hamfests?

Victor Martinez - 10 Feb 2004 03:36 GMT > I have a feeling he'll be bored of it before the first battery is fully > discharged, though... }:) I've been wanting to get one of those for a while, but the thought of it lasting just a few minutes before being eviscerated prevents me from purchasing it. Our guys are really tough with their toys... whenever we give them a fresh mousie, the first thing Issa does is chew off its tail and eat it. Sigh.

While he'll bat it a bit, and sortof chaice it, I am absolutely sure he knows its not a real bit of prey, because he often just looks at me holding the thing, or, if he has done a particularly spectacular display of kitty gymnastics at it, he'll stop and give himself a good wash and then has another look at me before he starts up the play again. He does not play with it like he plays with feathers-on-a-stick.
Fluffy is even funnier. Fluffy saw Shmogg play with the red bug an figured that any game Shmogg could play, she could play too. But Fluffy doesn't have the first clue about how to play like a cat, and since the red bug cannot be tossed by the human and caught in the doggy mouth, she just sort of jumps around and tries to interact with the 'bug' like Shmogg doesbut completley fails to understand that the whole point is is to bap at it (like a cat) and chase it (because in her doggy little mind, thats what balls and socks are for). So I have a huge shtoopid black & white doggy trying her very dardest to play like a cat whenever the Red Bug appears around her.
And naturally Shmogg is not *at all* amused by this terrible impersonation of his Supreme Highness.
Despite the fact we've only had the red bug for 3 nights, we already know not to get it out when Fluffy is hanging around, because utter disaster (and one p*ssed off cat) ensues.

Poor dumb Sid (RB) was the only one who consistently fell for it.
The Moose on the other hand, loses her tiny little mind when she sees it, much like Fluffy. Just goes to show that cats are MUCH smarter than d*gs.

He just bats at it listlessly for about 2 seconds when it's right in front of him, then lies down for a nap. He gives me this "you can't fool *me* with that shtoopid light" look. Too bad, could have been fun... -- Britta Check out pictures of Vino at: http://photos.yahoo.com/badwilson click on the Vino album

One interesting discovery: toddlers enjoy chasing the dot too. :-)

He would sit there, and I would just point it in front of him, and after a second he would try to catch. I used to be able to get him to try jumping up the wall. hehehehee
Now he looks at it and will occasionally go after it, but now it's more like, "Oh, it's that thing, well I don't feel like playing with it." If he's REALLY in a playful mood to play with me, then he'll chase it.
Mischief didn't quite know what to make of the red dot, but now EVERY time I pick it up off my desk, her ears perk up. She'll even come down off the cat tree to investigate. (heehee, like right now as I'm writing this!)
Now, she's walking over to the corner where she last saw it, trying to see where it went.
(turning over to Cat POV)
Mischief :THERE IT IS!!!! KILL!!!!!! Hey! Where'd it go? Oh, there it is, I'll just hide behind this backpack until it comes closer. Come on.....come closer.......GOTCHA!! Drat, missed again. Now where'd it go? I know Mama Kristi has sometime to do with it.....Ah, there it is.....steadyyyyyyyyy............POUNCE!! Darn it! where'd it go now? Oh there it is................Act Uninterested.......WHAT red dot? I don't see anything...
Imp: Huh? what's going on? Oh, it's the red dot? ooooooo, I'll get it!!!
Mischief: No, you dummy!! wait until it comes CLOSER!!
Imp: I got it!!!! I'll get it! Hey it went up the wall!!!
Mischief: You dummy!! I TOLD you to wait!!!
Imp: That's not fair!!! It's a conspiracy, I know it!!!
Mischief: Oh shut up! Come here red dot........come here......
Imp: I got it!!!
Mischief: No, I GOT IT......Drat!!
Imp: Where'd it go? Where'd it go?
Mischief: It's gone you dummy! You chased it away.
Imp: Oh...............where is it??
Mischief: AHHH, it's on my leg!! Kill!!! Hmph!!! Fine, I'll climb up the cat tree. Who wants to chase a stupid dot any.......Hey! It's on the vertical blinds!!!!! (falls off cat tree) I MEANT TO DO THAT!!!
(end of Cat POV)
They've run off into the other room now, but every now and then if I shine it on the wall, it's only a matter of time until a cat tries to run up the wall to catch it.
heheheheheheheheheheheh
Later,
Kristi
