We were watching TV last night, I looked up and lo and behold, there's a calico
cat looking at me through the window. It was in the middle of a freezing cold
rain.
She ran at first, but wasn't too hard to catch. I had to crawl under the truck
but she let me drag her out and didn't fight.
We live in a rural place, so it's not like she wandered away from home. We
dried her off, fed her and put her in the guest bedroom away from the other
cats.
This is a *beautiful* cat. Such unusual markings, long hair, with a black mask
over her eyes and an otherwise yellow face. Dainty little thing.
I am taking her to the vet today but I am very concerned about her. She is
dreadfully thin, matted and her third eyelid is showing. The thing that
concerns me most I guess is FIP. We'll see what he says.
Anyway, if she turns out healthy I'll keep her because the shelter is full.
Unless a good home materializes out oof nowhere, but I'm not going to bank on
that.
Please, please purr for a good health check. This is going to be a long haul
and she'll have to stay in the bedroom a long time. Yoda isn't vaccinated and I
can't risk getting him sick.

Oh, Karen. You know me. I took a picture as soon as we got her fed and halfway
dried off. I didn't post it because it is such a bad picture. But maybe it will
help if you all know who you're purring for.
She really isn't ugly. It's just a bad picture. She acts and looks a lot better
this morning, more bright-eyed too and has let me brush some of the mats out.

Aww, she does look funny, but I'm sure she will be a beauty when she starts
feeling better and has had her fur seen to. Are you going to try and sort it
out yourself, or are you going to let the vet do it?
Purrs still coming over.

That was a very hearwarming (my fingers first typed "heartworming"!) story.
You're going to have one good looking cat after a bath and grooming. I'm

DH pays no attention to such matters, apparently :).
He doesn't read the NG, just pays attention to things that I point out. In
this case I said "Come see this stray one of my cat people rescued, isn't it
cool?" So therefore, he just assumed it was a male, since it was cool. He
was wrong, of course.

Yes, I don't think that photo is showing her on her best day! She
must actually be very pretty, with those markings. It's funny how her
markings look so symmetrical, not as random as you would expect from a
calico. They look planned and functional, the way you might expect
from markings on a wild animal in its natural habitat. It's possible
that Sherry has actually discovered a new species of cat or badger!

Oh, this is so fortunate for the new cat. A cat in the condition you
describe might not have survived much longer with cold weather. Shee sounds
like a beautiful cat. I do hope all the vet tests come back negative.

Sherry,
I got a chuckle out of that. Not hard to catch: all you had to do is crawl
under a truck in the dead of winter and drag her out.
The best part is that nearly all of the people in this group would consider
that perfectly logical while much of the rest of the world wouldn't

Purrs for the calico kitty to be only suffering from neglect and hunger, and
even more purrs for you for taking her in. She could have died in the cold and
wet, without enough food.

The fact that she didn't fight suggests that she is not feeling well. I hope
that this is wrong. My cats would fight tooth and nail if I tried that.

I hope she turns out healthy. Make sure that your vet runs all the
tests possible. Some of the
normal screening tests can provide incorrect results. In any case good
luck with her. She is a pretty kitty. Though it looks
like she isn't feeling too great right now. She definitely looks
uncomfortable.

But your cats have a good home - often cats who have "lost" their people
will understand that you're trying to help them. (I mean genuinely
"lost" cats, not ferals, who are used to being on their own).

I sure do agree with this. They *do* understand you're trying to help them. I
think she was asking for help at the window.
I am overwhelmed with the responses, all the support and purrs in this thread.
I am also just smitten with this cat. When I go in the bedroom, she circles my
feet and chirps like a little bird till I sit down, and she gets in my lap and
starts kneading. I just love her. She is so affectionate. I couldn't get an
appt. with the vet today, so it will be tomorrow. I didn't try another vet,
mostly because I don't think one day will make much difference in the outcome
and another day with a full belly might give her a little more security and
make her feel better. She eats really well and uses the litterbox. Seems
content and doesn't seem uncomfortable in any sense.
Thanks again and again for the purrrs. Will let you know something as soon as I
do.
Much love,
Sherry

Purrs that she receives a clean bill of health. It was pretty wet and
miserable here in SW Oklahoma over the weekend.
I think Rocky stayed in all day, except maybe two or three brief
forays out. He has been spending nights inside for about three weeks
now, but still refuses to use the litter box. He also prefers the
cheap dry food I put out for strays to what I put out inside.
