In the light of the snow and how it brings out the stupidness of the motorist -
I got this from another newsgroup. Worth the download time if you aren't on
broadband I think!

approach that. Still, I still didn't expect what happened. THANKS! for

your aim is good Helen - those guys on the other hand should no doubt have
been a lot better off, aiming the towing in the other direction ... oh my
...
what on earth posessed them to go about things the way they did?
but still - amaizing what happened ...

PS: Just north west of us in Central New York, US, the snow has been
falling at a rate of 6" per hour through out the day. Total snow fall
for the week from last friday till today is 6.5 feet, with another 8
to 18" expected tonight. My hubby has been snowblowing paths for my
outside cats to get to shelter and food. He is a sweetie!

Leave it to the male species not to clear the snow away from the rear
of the car first.  If they had cleared away the excess snow they
probably could have gotten out on their own.  Wonder what they told
the insurance company or the body shop when they got the car repaired.

Heh...well...better yet, they should have pulled the car forward or
to the left in to the relatively clear driveway.  Front wheel drive
car, as well.  Put the wheels where they can do the work.  Why they
were backing and pulling *in* to the snow is rather a mystery...
On top of that, most of the smaller imports tend to have tow hooks
or loops at the front.

Of course, if I read the license plate correctly, they're from Maryland,
which, especially if they're from the area near DC, means that any sense
they have regarding poor weather driving conditions was traded in when
they got a license.

Chris, (who drove a Chevy Camaro in NY winters for years, and came to
Virginia to finally witness a snowplow stuck in the snow....while
passing it in that same Camaro), and the Fairfax felines, who are
just as happy to *not* go out in the snow, thank you very much :)

Chris - DH and I lived in Fairfax for five years... and we, too, got a good
laugh at the snowplows stuck in a snowbank! LOL.

Well they have the video to prove exactly what happened.  Why on earth were
they taping this anyway?

My guess is that ONE of them was thinking 'this is never gonna work' while
the other ones were hepping each other up.

"I got a truck and a tow line"

"Yeah?"

"Sure. We'll just YANK it out"

third guy or possibly the only female there:

'Man, I gotta get this on tape'

The rest is history.

Uh....the less-than-winter-weather-informed Floridian here fails to grasp
the basics of this whole operation. Could they not have dug that snow away
from rear wheels, put car in neutral, and all *pushed* it out onto cleared
driveway/street (similar to rescueing a car from deep sand aground
situation)? But suggestions from me must only be just as ridiculous as what
occurred in video. Snow is not the same as sand.....

You see - you have a brain! The guys in the vid had only one brain-cell between
the lot of them and that single brain-cell was less use than an amoeba ;-)

No, that would have been the approach a sane person would have taken.

To me, it would have made much more sense to tow the car *forwards* where
there *was no snow* to begin with!

Should have been named "Idiots in Action". All they needed was a shovel and

Or clay kitty litter, which works quite well.  I used to keep a bag of
clay kitty litter in the trunk of my car every winter.  It helped me out
a couple of times.

Yep...I used to carry two fifty pound sand bags in the back of that
previously mentioned Camaro, along with a shovel, board or two, and
a set of jumper cables.  Luck must have driven with me.  I never
had to use any of it for that car, but it came in handy for plenty of
others.  Besides, the extra weight in the back helped...:)

My neighbors here in Fairfax get mad at me because I never shovel my
driveway.  Oh well....I'm still not the one burning the rubber off my
tires trying to park...;)  In the '96 blizzard I didn't have any place
to *put* the snow, so I used 4wd and low gear...and watched my neighbor
from Florida turn red with annoyance....;)

So...at least a few members of the male gender have a *slight* bit of an
idea, though I make no claims about the rest of my life...;)

Stacey, how much snow do you have up your way currently?  I need to call
my parents and see how much they have.

If your neighbor from FL had lived there long enough, I suppose he
eventually learned how to navigate his driveway. On my first visit to
Denver, I approached our convoy of snow-covered SUV's lined up in son's
driveway with their garden hose, thinking to wash the snow off them all.
Before I could reach the vehicles, son playfully tackled me and snatched
hose away, explaining that after my intended maneuver, vehicles would be
covered with *ice* instead of snow, and so would entire driveway! It was 4oF
that night. Ignorant Floridians running loose in snowy weather......have to
be carefully watched.

Heh-heh...  I don't think he *wanted* to stay after that year.  And his
vehicle of preference was BMW.  The older ones like the BMW2002 (That
was the year I actually learned how to overhaul the fuel system on one
of those models).  Those are obviously not the type of vehicle you want
to be depending on for learning to drive in snow.

Of course, you obviously know how to deal with deep sand, which is in
a lot of ways similar to snow.  I had to work on an environmental
project in Delaware before I really learned how to negotiate deep sand.
With an S10 pickup, all manual, 2wd, 4 cyl.  *That* was fun...:)  Good
thing it was the company truck...;)

As far as water and cold weather, well, I still love watching the queues
at the car washes in winter (especially near my parent's house in NY),
and wondering how many of them will have frozen locks after they have
the car washed.  I used to carry one of those small lock de-icers in my
car along with the jumper cables.

go through if there's more original text than new text, and hates

I used to carry a length of window screen to stick under my tires if I got
in a slippery spot and they were spinning. Worked like a charm!  After we
got stuck sitting on 490 for six hours not moving a few years back in a
blizzard, I've trained myself to always have a shovel, good warm clothing
and boots, a box of donuts, a bottle of Dew and a full pack of cigs before
heading out on a snowy morning. Never hurts to be prepared!

I remember that blizzard, we lived in apartments at the time that did not
have arranged parking per apt, so basically it was first come, first serve.
People would go out and shovel a spot then put lawn furniture, homemade
signs, garbage cans, etc. in the spot hoping no one would park there after
they'd spent all the time shoveling it. We, too, would just plow our car
into the snow without shoveling, LOL.. ticking people off!

It's about Moose-high, that is, about two feet not drifted. The drifts can
get about three to four feet in places. Yuck!

ROFLMAO!

That is *too* funny.

I guess what they have missed is that snow (and water) can move huge
boulders just by its own weight. Trying to drag a car *through* it is just
asking for disaster.

Still can't see why they just didn't go forward, but I have never had to
deal with snow.
