Eli's been injured....

Pat - 27 Jan 2004 07:18 GMT I don't know what happened.... Eli and Tommy were outside this evening, and I heard some commotion and screaming of cats. Went out and found Tommy on the roof and Eli nowhere in sight, nor did he come when called as he usually does.
I kept calling for Eli every few minutes. Finally he came out from under a car I have parked in the yard, and went straight into my bedroom. When any of the other cats tried to go in the bedroom, Eli growled at them.
Eventually Eli came to the bedroom door and just stood there, growling at everyone. Then he went back in the room. A while later I went in to lay down and read, and found Eli in the middle of my bed, sleeping. When I tried to move him, he growled at me.
He appears to be hurting a lot. There aren't any puncture wounds as far as I can tell.
He holds one front leg stiff and won't use it and doesn't want me to touch or move it. I carefully felt around his shoulder and back. All seems well there, but when I tried feeling his chest between his front legs, he was clearly uncomfortable.
His pupils less reactive to light than normal. I moved him carefully into a cat bed and covered him with a woolen sweater, because he was trembling. I got him to drink a little bit of water by dripping it onto his fur.
The most worrisome thing is he didn't resist being lifted into the cat bed and stayed in it when I moved it to different spots on my bed. Finally I decided to put him (in the cat bed) on the floor. I figured he might have difficulty jumping down. And even then, he just stayed motionless in the cat bed as I set it on the floor and covered him again with the sweater.
I am quite worried.... If he isn't a lot better be morning I will be taking him to the vet. In the meantime, some purring for sweet Eli to feel better would be greatly appreciated.

Pat - 27 Jan 2004 08:13 GMT It's possible.... I got the feeling some animal out there may have chased them, maybe some of Gloria's dogs - or ? - it sounded like a fight of some kind. There's been a stray coming around and starting fights lately but my cats usually stand their ground at those times. I also heard a bang against the house, low down. I've never seen Eli on the roof before, he usually hangs out underneath the house. Tommy's the one that likes to get on the roof. This time he looked down at me but wouldn't come down. It took him quite a while to come in, but not as long as it took Eli. Tommy usually comes right down when I call him. I got the feeling they were hiding from something -- Tommy on the roof, and Eli, wherever.

Pat - 27 Jan 2004 16:34 GMT This morning he is sitting up in bed, grooming himself. He drank water from a dish and doesn't mind being touched on the chest/belly like he did last night. He's also been lying on the stiff leg instead of keeping it on top.
I'm sure now that this is not a dire emergency. I'll be watching closely for a while but at this point to try to stick him in a carrier and go out in the frigid cold probably isn't the best thing for him.
Karen - 27 Jan 2004 17:11 GMT That's quite a lot of improvement. Is he eating? I hope he continues to get better. I'd sure keep him as quiet as possible though. The other cats will probably pick up on it and leave him alone anyway. Glad to hear he is doing better.

Pat - 27 Jan 2004 17:32 GMT The other cats have, in fact, been leaving him alone. I'll try giving him breakfast in bed in a while, too. More news to follow later...
I'm sure the healing purrs are the reason behind his improvement. Thanks, everyone.

Pat - 27 Jan 2004 17:59 GMT Shortly after I posted the last update, I got up from the desk to get some catfood to take into the bedroom for Eli, and when I turned around, there he was in my chair! I told him to go back to his bed and helped him get down. He limped into the bedroom and got in his bed. I offered him some canned Iams Kitten Formula but he turned up his nose at it so I gave it to Abelard instead. When I went back to the bedroom to cover Eli, he was up in MY bed again!
I felt all over the leg he won't use and can move it around without him objecting or resisting. It looks straight enough. He only pulls it away when I palpate the muscle below his elbow. I bet he's sprained something.

Sounds like he is definitely on the mend. Purrs for that to continue. It sounds to me as he has been hit pretty hard by something... Maybe a slow coming car or a bicycle. In other word, no lethal injuries expected, no fractures, just a serious crash.
But if nothing is broken, then he should recover within a few days. But keep an eye on him (I know you will), especially his leg. If he hasn't started using it after three days, you should take him to the vet.
Best wishes from me and two silly Devon Rex indoors... Hans, Tin?viel and Teti
Pat - 28 Jan 2004 05:40 GMT LOL Hans!! We live at the dead end of a private road with absolutely zero traffic. THANK GOD!!!
I felt all over the cat's body a while ago. He really does not seem to be broken anywhere but still I am taking the 3-day suggestion to heart.

I really hope that Eli will be okay. Even though he's doing better, you might want to at least phone your vet and talk to him/her about Eli. I know if you're tight on money and with cold weather, you really don't want to have to take the cat out if possible. And I've been wrestling with this, too, since Cosmo tried climbing straight up the cat tree the other night, but Internet was on top, so Cosmo tried to get down, but fell instead, flat on his side, on the table next to the tree. Scared the heck out of us, but we've watched him closely, and he seems to be perfectly fine -- heck, he was bolting down the stairs yesterday like a kitten (and this guy is 13, with CRF and a heart murmur!). Anyway, purrs that Eli recovers fully.

Hopitus2 - 28 Jan 2004 05:05 GMT Your report on Eli's original condition worries me...it sounds like shock. If he'll permit it now, why don't you take a good look on his chest and forearms (sort through his fur) looking for wounds/bite marks. I know he appears not to have life-threatening injuries now, but he may need an antibiotic injection for possible infection if you find any. From what you say, it sounds like x-rays not needed at this point. Keep in mind that I work only on hoomins and am sure not the last word in pet medicine or trauma care......
