Victor Martinez - 21 Jan 2004 14:58 GMT > No, I'm not, and I'm not Norwegian either. :o) Doh! Indeed... Finland is close, but it's not Norway. BTW, we watched an interesting show on the vikings on TV last night. It's really impressive how far they got in those (relatively) small ships! One thing wasn't very clear to me (they didn't really talk much about it), when did scandinavia divide again after being united under a viking king (can't remember his name)? How long was it a single country?

How long was it a single country? Well, I'm not a historian, but as far as I understand, it wasn't a single country in the viking era, but Scandinavia consisted of several independent city states, which traded amongst themselves and co-operated to go overseas to trade (and "trade", i.e. loot and pillage). The nation states, Sweden, Norway, Denmark - and Finland, though strictly speaking, it is not on the Scandianvian peninsula, but it became a part of Sweden, so is historically a part of Scandinavia - started to emerge during the middle ages, I think. (Iceland was pretty isolated from the rest of the world at that time.) Hmm, I think I'd better not write more, because I'm pretty much out of my depth here. :o) I do know that the vikings held large parts of the British isles under the so-called Danelaw in the 8th - 10th centuries, and that the word "viking" was invented during the 19th century by Scandinavian nationalists.

The word "viking" is from the viking period and means to go raiding (to go viking)
Marina - 22 Jan 2004 04:53 GMT > The word "viking" is from the viking period and means to go raiding (to go viking) Oh, thanks for putting me right about that. But the people didn't call themselves vikings, did they?

How long was it a single country? Speaking of Finland, I read an interesting article in the Bangkok Post the other day about a Finnish tax accountant that was at his desk at work after having been dead for 2 days! Marina - 22 Jan 2004 14:57 GMT > Speaking of Finland, I read an interesting article in the Bangkok Post the > other day about a Finnish tax accountant that was at his desk at work after > having been dead for 2 days! Wow! Yeah, that made big headlines here. It seems he used to be away on audits pretty often, so people didn't miss him, until someone went to ask him to lunch and found him. His co-workers had been working happily (if that's the right word for tax workers ;) in the adjoining offices for two days, never realising he was lying dead in his own office. Spooky.

Spooky. Just shows how absorbed in their work accountant's can be - especially during "tax season" when they put in so much overtime they're half-asleep, anyway!

I don't think Marina is Norwegian, why would she care? (She lives in Finland, so I've always assumed she is Finnish.)

It is a very special day for Norwegians today. There hasn't been a Norwegian queen for over 600 years! In 1814, the new Norwegian constitution stated that the throne should only be inherited from father to son. This wasn't changed until 1990, and now the Princess is here!
Thank you!
Hans
GraceCat - 21 Jan 2004 16:39 GMT > > On your new royal baby :) > [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > > Hans Awesome! But now I'm thoroughly confused. I went to the Royal website and it said that until King Harald V, there hadn't been a prince born in Norway in 567 (?) years. If I understand right, that means girls have been born and the throne has went to nephews and uncles and brothers of the King?
By Norwegian Queen, you mean one that ascended the thrown by her own right, correct?
Grace so confused today she's giving up

To your last question: Yes!
Scandinavia (Norway, Sweden and Denmark) is not easy to understand when it comes to history over the centuries. But, to take the brief version: The last Norwegian Queen was Margrete (1388-1412), after that Norway was entering a union with Denmark, which lasted until 1814. The Norwegians had just the time to make their own constitution, before they went into a union with Sweden. This union lasted until 1905, when it was just before a war starting between the two countries. The war was called off, and Norway became a superior nation again.
So, what about the Kings and Queens? Well, believe it or not, the new Norwegian King (Haakon VII) was elected through headhunting amongst European candidates, and a final referendum by the Norwegian people. The new King came from Denmark, and was baptizes Prince Carl, but took the name Haakon after several historical Kings.
Maybe this will explain some of the questions you had...

Stacey - 22 Jan 2004 01:35 GMT Well when I heard the news today, I thought "Dang, is that Marina's country?" because, normally, I'm *always* thinking about Marina. But then I thought, "No, that's Norway and Marina is in Finland!". But then I thought "Well, someone has to be from Norway, maybe Hans, who annoys me most of the time but then goes and doesn't annoy me some of the time!" So, anyway, those of you who are from Norway... or who deserve congrats for the new baby, congrats!
Stacey :)
