SPOILERS FOR BRAVO's CELEBRITY POKER SHOWDOWN!!!
This really does have something to do with cats....
Over the past year, televised poker tournaments have become the rage
on US television. The game of choice is the variety known as Texas
Hold'em.
So over the past month, the Bravo cable tv network has broadcast
weekly 1-hour episodes of the "Celebrity Poker Showdown". It was a
poker tournament where 25 celebrities played for a $250K prize pool,
with prizes going to charity.
Each week 5 celebrities played until only one is left. (some of the
celebrities involved, such as Ben Affleck and Hank Azaria, are known
to be very good poker players too). Each weekly winner's charity got
the prize money, and the weekly losers' charities also received lesser
amounts.
Tonight they showed the final episode, a 2 hour special where the
weekly winners faced off, with the champion earning another $100K for
their charity and lesser bonus amounts for the losers' charities.
So what does this have to do with cats? One of the celebrities was an
actress named Nicole Sullivan, who played for a charity named Alley
Cat Allies, a group that helps feral cats. She made it to tonight's
championship game. And she won! : )
It was kind of cute after she won - when she talked about how this
wasn't a rich charity and could really use the money, she was near
tears. That, or all the beer she'd been drinking was coming out <g>
Congratulations to Nicole Sullivan and Alley Cat Allies!

Oh, that is wonderful, Jeanne! Thanks for telling us about that. She's a
great comedienne, too.

I've been watching the series. I watch a lot of the poker shows. She
was a really good player. Poker is not as much luck as people think, in
the long run good players win a lot more often than bad ones. Its a lot
like backgammon that way. She had one really lucky win but she played
really well. The first round she was down to a few hundred, went all in,
won and then came back. She was all in once tonight as well and came
back. One for the kitties.

The tournament results are top of the page headline on the Alley Cat
Allies website http://www.alleycat.org/
I like watching poker too, which is really weird because I thought it
was a silly idea (poker on TV?) when they started that World Poker
Tour thing on The Travel Channel last year (they're replaying the
championship for that tonight, btw). Wasn't long before I got hooked.
I wonder just how much poker Ms. Sullivan had played before. She kept
saying she didn't know much at all, but as you say she played very
well at all the critical times. Do you think maybe they all got
hustled? ; )

I have watched some of the Tour, Binnion's World Championsip of Poker and
this. I think Poker is very interesting to watch. I grew up watching my
parents and grandparents play cards. I don't really play poker. Played
blackjack, spades, hearts and pinochle for money at various times. But
poker has a lot of drama to it.

Ohhhhh. THAT'S who she is. The dog walker. She is funny. It's nice to see
cats get a mention in something like this for once.
