Yoj - 10 Sep 2005 21:18 GMT Whew! I was getting worried. Twice today when I tried to come to rpca, I got the indication there were thousands of messages. Even though I was set up to group messages in threads, all the messages were unthreaded and they were all troll-type messages. It looked as though the trolls had completely taken over rpca. Now everything is the way it should be.

Bridget - 10 Sep 2005 21:56 GMT YOUR provider evidently saw fit to remove these from the server, I have them ALL on my computer. A total of 14,000 of them. If it happens again, I may have to talk to my provider about removing them too. This is just nuts.

MLB Judging from your headers, you are posting messages through xmission.com, which means that they are probably whom you are reading messages through as well. The simplest method would probably be to look up the phone number for their tech support department (generally a toll-free call), and talk to the tech support people.

I had already done that and the tech support said they could not do anything, that I would have to contact the newsgroup supplier -- that is where I got lost. Thanks for answering. I have some new ones coming through now, MLB

On Netscape, you click "View" at the top of your screen, then "Headers" and "All". (This gives you the true headers, most of which are skipped over or abbreviated for normal viewing.) Then you "Forward" the message to "abuse@(the provider shown by the sender). If there's a header marked "Complaints to:" forward it to that address, as well. Since there are hundreds of thread titles, though, it takes almost as long to forward them as it does to READ them. I've just been highlighting a whole string of them and clicking "Mark thread read". (I may miss one or two from regular posters, but that's a small price to pay.) Hopefully the idot doing it will discover some other amusement - pulling the wings off of flies, perhaps.

LazyRaptor - 11 Sep 2005 01:45 GMT The S.O.B. who flooded rpca with all those idiot messages has evidently been doing it to groups all over the internet since at least December of last year. He seems to be based in the United Kingdom. He flooded a gardening group there, and many others. I think his method is to flood for a short while and move on, before people really organize and do something about him. Although I'm not sure if anything at all can be done about moronic misfits like this. Who can afford to invest the money to track them down, especially if they're in some foreign country? It's hateful to realize we're at the mercy of trash like this, but there seem to be no real tools to deal with them, or at least none that I'm aware of. Maybe someone else here knows of something that can be done?

Anyone whose news service doesn't take action should seriously considering subscribing to another news service, be it free or for pay, that does.
I never subscribed to a paid news service in my life before this weekend -- I always used the ones that came with my ISP or the internet-based ones. Then this mess happened, and I noticed that the majority of posters here who were declaring their newsgroup to be garbage-free were using news.individual.net for their newsgroups.
So now, my suggestions to anyone who wants to return to our regularly scheduled newsgroup are twofold:
- Use http://www.talkaboutpets.com/group/rec.pets.cats.anecdotes/ for free access until your ISP/news provider/etc is able to clear the garbage off their servers. There's no killfile, but they do block the gibberish posts from ever appearing. - If you have a little spare cash, subscribe to news.individual.net for the best of both worlds: no gibberish posts AND the ability to killfile. Once everything's set up properly, if you didn't KNOW there was nonsense afoot, it's no exaggeration to declare that you wouldn't be able to tell there's a problem. The disruptive stuff literally never shows up.
HTH and all that good stuff.

Any talk of cats will be reported and you will have to deal with the wrath of UTB.

Don't these under-age imbeciles > have anything better to do? Where are their parents? I spent some time deleting all the first batch, but when the second batch came in I found of way of highlighting all, not just the ones I wanted to delete unfortunately unless I did them individually, but posts I'd intended to reply to as well. I have a brand new clean rpca with just a few real posts in it on News Individual Net, who seem to be on to the problem as they have made the troll messages unavailable on the server, just leaving the downloaded headers. As it happens, I have a backup on Wanadoo newsreader, they drop posts but I kept them because they support binaries and NIN don't. I like to look at abpa sometimes. Problem is I rarely read rpca on wanadoo and only clean up there occasionally, so I now have more than 18,000 messages on it! Thank goodness for that little bar thingie that you can drag down on the right hand side under the ^ to skip like lightning by all those troll posts. Whether I will be able to remember the posts I wanted to respond to is another matter ;-) So here are purrs and prayers for everyone who is ill, has a sick kitty, has missing relatives in the hurricane, is struggling financially or needs a job, etc. in case I deleted you. I will never be forced to give up this group. It's too wonderful and amazing and unique. If necessary I will delete thousands of posts individually even though it will take a long while. I will do it more than once or twice, if I have to, as many times as is needed.
I worry about the members on dial up. I know how cross I used to get to have to pay to download spam, but it's no sweat to me now broadband finally reached me. I'd like to think of a way that all you dial-ups could unsubscribe for a while, be updated on important things by broadbanders and resubscribe when advised it's safe again. It escapes me at the moment though I'm sure there is one. On the other hand we could all reassemble on catslaves. I'm not a member though, and I don't know how to get to be one either.
