What the hell is going on here?

Mischief - 10 Sep 2005 05:06 GMT I've started Vet Tech school again and i've been busy with work and school and springboard diving so i haven't had a chance to really post any Vet tech journals or other stories about my cats
But in the past few days, i am shocked to see what people have written. All the insults, the sexual references, the trolling of people who never showed up before and are probably the same person with several googl identities, just the filth that has been posted.
What the hell is going on with this group? This was a group where we posted stories about our cats and occasionally about other issues but the group always was friendly. I enjoyed posting my stories and keeping everyone up to date about my training as a vet technician. I'm taking Radiology and Clinical Pathology and plan on graduation in 2006. I'm also keeping a journal for my work study class and was planning on sharing that journal with this group.
But i'm not going to read this filth any longer. There really is no point. People are worried about their families and their own lives whether they have been directly affected by Katrina or not and people are making lewd and totally out of place remarks. This is not a group to insult one another or to ask for "pictures"
I've tried to ignore it but it's hard to ignore this crap when trying to find out whether someone has contacted their family. It's hard to try to read anything.
To the people that are doing this, what are you trying to accomplish? Getting people pissed off at you? You enjoy stirring up trouble? To get a response?
Well this is my response, I have almost lost all interest in this group now. Why should i post if it's just going to attract all this crap? So i ask the people here, the real people that actually might give a care about my stories and my opinion; Why should I stay here? I haven't even been the target of any filth but why should i stay and post anything at all when this group has degenerated into a message board of garbage?
All i'm asking for is a reason to keep reading, to keep coming to this site and being so inspired by the stories of others i want to share my stories. But if this continues, then i'm sorry to say that this group may lose another member.

What Helen said. Please just killfile the Ignoramus Brigade(s) so you don't have to put up with their drivel, and keep posting.
Be glad if you actually HAVE a killfile. People who read Usenet via the internet have to recognize who the troll posters are and make a conscious effort to ignore them, since there's no Usenet-related website that I know of that includes killfile capability.

This is all a load of crap. You could easily take your asinine tea party to a private board. But you don't. You want to flood ISPs with complaints and generally make a collective pain in the a.s of yourselves, as though you expect the rest of us to see you as a privileged class. Well, we don't, and you're not. You're just like the rest of us, except most of you are dumber, fatter and uglier.

Can't speak for anyone else, but > I'm just ignoring all the rubbish. I second Helen's statement. If all the nice and friendly people who are genuinely interested in cats leave, the trolls win, which is probably what they're trying to accomplish. They can't understand online friendliness between people interested in the same thing so they're trying to stamp it out by being crude, rude and lewd.
But people like them is why we have killfiles. My killfile is now humongous thanks to these low life pea-brains. Not to mention my taking the time to thumb through my cookbooks for good recipes to post....

If we do that, the trolls have won. That's what they want. The are malicious and get their kicks through destructive behavior. So, now I just ignore them. I sometimes reply to one before I realize it's a troll, but once I recognize it as a troll, I simply stop posting *anything* to their threads. I think it would destroy all their fun if the rest of us would literally refuse to post a reply to them and just go on posting the type of messages that we have in the past.

Recipes are traditional with this group, but they really only show that someone is reading the messages (and is probably aggragated by them). I think it's better to completely ignore the trolls. On the other hand, I do think people could be a bit more selective in who they designate as trolls -- in other words, a person is not a troll just because someone disagrees with them or doesn't like the message.

Steve Touchstone - 10 Sep 2005 07:34 GMT Kristi, I know what you mean. I got caught up in RL and didn't read the NG this past week. A couple thousand posts when I downloaded this morning, once I filtered out the recognisable troll names about a quarter of those disappeared. Unfortunately, it appears they're once again forging posts from regulars, so it's impossible to completely ignore them. I suppose the best thing to do is ignore them, and the worst thing is to reply to their posts. I, along with many others look forward to your vet tech journals. If the trolls get to be too much for you, let us know how you're doing over in yahoo so we don't lose touch.

It is sad to have to mark so many thread as read, but to me it's worth it for the caring people who are the core of this group. Even though this group and the people in it (the real people, not the trolls) are devoted to cats, there were lots who posted sympathetic messages when I told about my mother's little dog, who finally went to the Bridge.
The love and caring is still here. You just have to wade through the garbage to find it. I think it's worth it. I hope you decide it is too.

It's disgusting the amount of trailer trash that has been posting here recently, but the best strategy is just IGNORE it, and NEVER EVER respond to it, and they will give up and go away.
Still lots and lots of very nice people here. I seldom have much to say; My one cat Kenzie is so well behaved I have nothing much to write about her, (although Flippy sent out one of my better stories recently) , and RL keeps me from spending even as much time responding to posts as much as I should and would certainly like to.
I type extremely slowly which doesn't help.
But I certainly enjoy reading your and every else's stories, even if I only manage to have time to read the first post in most threads.
I've saved a HUGE file of kitty pictures that I love to look through when I have time, too.
So PLEASE, PLEASE, don't go away because a few people with IQ's equal to their shoe sizes are trying to turn RPCA into their little troll haven.

Hans Schrøder - 10 Sep 2005 11:43 GMT No reason to leave the group! Trolls come and go, the main thing is that they are to be totally ignored!!
Don't feed them, not even with recipes, if a troll gets into a thread, stop the conversation on that particular thread immediately. Continue on another thread instead.
If you leave, they win, and we won't let that happen. Just ignore them, and pretend we're making "business as usual".
I love your journals, don't let us lose them! Keep up the good work, mischief...

meee - 12 Sep 2005 07:35 GMT I just ignore them, people like that aren't worth giving attention. They are probably really bored with their life, and think they are smarter than us because they use fourletter words. I figure the people who are hear to tell and hear stories about cats and ask questions will stay, and if we ignore the trolls they will go and annoy someone who'll give them a better reaction. I am relatively new to this group, but I would love to hear your stories. My sister just finished vet tech, which is a brand new job in australia, there were only vets and vet nurses previously. She was just lucky enough to score the first vet tech in the state. I would love to hear your stories, so I can learn a bit more about what she's doing, and pass them on to her so she can learn what vet tech in the us is. She says you get to do way more interesting stuff there than she does here. Keep the stories coming!!

As it wasn't really her thing, an opportunity came up for her to go to Ipswich's UQ campus to do vet tech so she changed courses. I'm not sure when the course came in, it could be fairly new, but I'm not sure. After she graduated she discovered that there was no such thing as a vet tech in Australia so she worked as a part time vet nurse for nearly a year- she didn't even get regular work, so she was pretty disappointed. Then about a month ago a larger vet clinic in Brisbane contacted her clinic as they'd heard they had a vet tech working there. Needless to say she was only too happy to take the job, and now she's as happy as larry! all this is in qld, but check this year's qtac book.

Debra Berry - 12 Sep 2005 18:43 GMT Hi Kristi,
I share your disgust at the garbage that the trolls are posting here. I agree with some others that the best thing to do is just totally ignore their posts and do not reply. If you have a kill-file enter them into it as you see them. I have read and occasionally posted to this group for a long time and we go through periods where the trolls invade. If we ignore them they will get bored and go away.
I enjoy your stories about your kitties, your school adventures, and your work at the vet hospital. I hope you will continue to be a part of the group because of the many good people who post and read.

Not this time, You all screwed up. Now the group has new owners.

You do have freedom of speech, and so do we. As I have only just turned up, if someone has offended your friend, I've had nothing to do with it. We're going to discuss cats, while you discuss weed. As you feel free to join in, so will we. By the way, have you actually grown marijuana, or are you just trying to provoke people?
