Urgent Q. Flea Control

I have got myself 4 little urchin throw-away kittens today. They are
completely covered in fleas. About 10 weeks old.

Problem is, I don't have any Advantage, and have called around, no
friends have any on hand, and the vet is closed.

One friend does have one vial of Frontline for dogs. Now, I already
have read that it is the same formulation as the Frontline for cats,
the only difference is the volume in the vial. After reading on it,
though, it says plainly "Use on Dogs ONly Do not use on rabbits. Do not

use on other animals." And I'm too afraid to use it now. Are there
*different* kinds of Frontline now?

The pack says, "Frontline Top Spot." Active ingredients: fipronil,
9.7%, inert ingredients, 90.3%

I bathed them with Dawn dishwashing liquid and managed to drown, pick
and squish a great number of the fleas. There are still live fleas on
them, though. Can anyone advise me about using the Frontline.

I've never used Frontline To Spot, only ever the spray and over on this side
of the pond, it's the same for both cats & dogs & is safe on tiny kittens
from a couple of days old. I've used on kittens a week old & they've been
fine. When I took in Francis as a kitten he was *infested* with fleas. After
having him sprayed with Frontline I combed over 50 dead ones from him - no
wonder he was run down - he was exceptionally anaemic.... I like Frontline
far more than fleas..

I'm sitting here at the moment surrounded by dead and dying fleas, as I
Frontlined the cats this morning.........

If you have a syringe, measure it out and give each one about 1/4 ml.

Did you miss the part where she said it said on it: "Use on Dogs ONLY.
Do not use on rabbits. Do not use on other animals."
These are kittens involved unless YOU are vet or vet tech you shouldn't
be giving out advise like this. Especially without seeing the kittens.
You have no idea how big they are. For all that you know 1/4 of a ml
could kill the kittens.

All Frontline packages say the same thing. The chemical is the same, and
many people on this group use dog Frontline on their cats because it's much
more economical.

And I have a pretty good idea of the size of 10-week-old kittens!
Pat - 04 Sep 2005 23:19 GMT
I neglected to mention that the reason the Frontline package says don't use
on other animals is because the full ampule of a dog-sized dose is too large
for a cat, and the manufacturer doesn't want any dummies using the full
(dog) ampule on a cat (or rabbit, or whatever).

The sweet 2 year old tabby calico in my lap at the moment and her
brother got half a ml each of Frontline Plus at about 12 weeks - she's
been as flea free as all the others ever since.

Plus and Top differ in that Plus has slightly more fipronil and also
contains  (S)-methoprene.  No side effects on any of my cats or
kittens.

Since they are essentially the same price, I see no reason ever to buy
the Top version.

I wouldn't hesitate to use 1/4 ml on a ten-week old kitten.

Thank you guys. Since I pretty much picked & squished most of the
fleas, I just wanted to put a little drop on them. I just wanted to
make sure the info. that I had wasn't outdated, that Frontline was
*still* using the same formula for dogs and cats.
Here's the stupid story. My son found them in his front yard, they
picked them up and started looking them over. Some little girls came by
and said, "Those are our kittens." Great. So they took them home. Five
minutes later they were back with the kittens and said, "Our mom took
them away. She doesn't want them back. But she said we can keep the
mama cat."
ARRRGGGHHH!!!!
I have spent the day cooling off so that I don't locate Mama and chew
her head off. I plan to very calmly tell her that the kittens already
had flea anemia, and would have probably been dead in another few days.
I plan to give her an application for the free spay/neuter program for
Mama Cat at the shelter. Then if she gives me any lip I am going to
tell her that dumping defenseless kittens in someone's yard in the heat
is a felony according to the Oklahoma Animal Cruelty statute and I am
pressing charges unless she lets me spay that mama cat.
Lord help me that I don't lose my temper.

That's a very good plan. They don't need any more kittens!
gggggrrrrrrr
Good luck Sherry.

I second that one.  Why put additional stress on a momma kitty when help is
freely out there?  I don't understand it.

We will be sending you "temper temper" purrs. And thank-you purrs to you
for looking after the poor kittens. I hope the flea problem is under
control  now.

Thanks, Marina. It went pretty well. That family is poor as church mice
though. Turns out the mama cat isn't even theirs, it just strayed up.
She took the S/N application and said she will follow through with it.
We'll see. I actually got a home for one of the kittens to my son's
next door neighbor. I'm taking the remaining 3 to the shelter tomorrow
and am going to ask if they still have any of that excess canned
9-Lives I can give the lady w/ the mama cat.
It's so frustrating. They're actually not bad people. They just don't
have a clue about pet responsibilities and I swear she honestly thought
school kids would pick those kittens up, take them home, and they'd end
up in wonderful homes. She thought what she was doing was okay. Sigh. I
didn't get mad at her at all. I just felt sorry that people can be so
hillybilly ignorant about little animals like that.

hmmm excess 9Lives, are you referring to the bundles of Fancy Feast you
supposedly bought them?
sriddles@aol.com - 06 Sep 2005 14:47 GMT
No, I meant Fancy Feast. We have an agreement with Purina Mills and
feed Purina products exclusively, since they give it to us at the local
mill. Purina makes Friskies, Fancy Feast, Pro Plan, Purina One, in
addition to Fancy Feast. However, we have to take what's available and
rarely ever get Fancy Feast. Angel loves Fancy Feast, it was her
favorite food, and she was sick and not eating well. Hence the
purchase.
Unfortunately 9-Lives is readily available 4 cans for a dollar at the
Dollar store, and a lot of people donate it, or bring what they have
left when they relinquish an animal, and it stacks up down there.
Generally we give to poor people who otherwise have a hard time buying
cat food.

The real mystery is why I'm bothering explaining this to you. Go back
into lurkdom, Trish, until your next opportunity to show your a**.

The cat version contains 9.8% fipronil. Be careful of the dose amount if you
use it, use half a regular cat dose. The regular cat dose is 0.5ml.

I can't advise about the Frontline, but be careful of the dishwashing
liquid.  When my ex-husband brought home my tiny dog Sampson, he dunked him
in the sink and bathed him with dishwashing liquid and managed to burn his
eyes.  That cost a visit to the vet which we couldn't afford.  I bought a
bottle of Suave baby shampoo.  Amazingly enough, even though he lived 18
years and I bathed him once a week, I never had to replace that bottle!  I
broke down in tears after his death when I opened the cupboard and there was
that bottle on the shelf with about 1/2 inch of shampoo in it.

Bless you, Sherry, for all you do.  Good luck with the bitty kitties!

When I was a kid, my mom preferred Fels Naptha soap for the laundry, and we
used it also to bathe our cats because it killed their fleas. O don't know
if the soap is toxic to cats, but none of ours ever seemed to be affected by
it.
