You can use your mouse to click and drag the map around. The satellite view + text (Hybrid) is probably easier for pinpointing where you are. I can't say the images are exactly up to date, but what the heck, it's fun! If you make a mistake, just tell me what the entry is (email is fine) and I'll delete it so you can try again. I cannot move you (hell, I can barely move myself sometimes! LOL) but I can delete you.

I see "Marcia Slave to Otis" is in the Atlantic ocean off the coast of France. IIRC she did suggest a deletion of this one.

Good luck. The problem is, when I'm in Admin mode I can't view the map.

Without knowing exactly what you can see, I'd suggest that if Marcia's correct marker is somewhere within the UK (as I think she said it was) then the incorrect one will be seen below and to the left of that, ie Southwest.
Hope that helps

BTW if you would delete me, now that I see how to magnify the map I can do a better job of landing in the right place.

I clicked on my approximate location and filled in my name and message. However, it asks for an http link, which I don't understand, and tells me I have to specify a place, without giving me the opportunity to do so. What am I doing wrong?

It's not required. Just select an icon to represent yourself and click Place.
A couple of hints.... the hybrid view is a satellite map which will zoom down to street level, sometimes even to house level. Rather than use the scroll bar to go left and right, you can click and drag the map around. You will need to use the vertical zoom to place your marker, but don't worry about getting very specific. If you have other problems or need me to delete your entry so you can try again just let me know :)

Just for kicks, I looked up a couple of spots in the UK where I used to live. I could find my Mum's old house in Windsor (of course, the opposite end of town to where the Queen lives) with no problem. But when I shifted the map over a mile or so to look for my Dad's old place, which was a bit closer to those royal neighbours, the highest res satellite views were not available at all, and that whole area of town around the castle was very badly blurred. Take a look at http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=51.478015,-0.622272&spn=0.018028,0.041340&t=k&hl=en and zoom in, and you'll see what I mean. The satellite views of whole area from Windsor Castle through to Heathrow Airport are doctored so you can't read 'em. Too many interesting things and people in that area, I guess!

Anyone tried finding the White House or their local equivalent?

You can find it if you know where on Pennsylvania Avenue to look :) The Washington Momument is prevelant as are the Jefferson and Lincoln memorials, the Smithsonian Institution, etc. The thing the map does not point out is in big huge letters, THIS IS THE WHITE HOUSE! After 9/11, can you blame them?

Helen Wheels - 04 Sep 2005 15:42 GMT >>>>>For new folks who may not have put themselves on the map, here's the >>>>>link: [quoted text clipped - 40 lines] > > Jill Heck, no, I don't blame anyone. I'm a little surprised, given that detailed views of a big UK landmark like Windsor Castle, seems to be obscured while streets only a short distance away are clearly visible. But maybe that's just coincidence after all.
I just looked up the only 3 landmarks I'd recognise in Sydney (the Opera House, Harbour Bridge and Sydney Airport) and found that high res satellite view wasn't available for the Opera House and Harbour Bridge area. But the view of Sydney Airport was incredibly clear - you can even identify the aircraft taxiing around the place.
This virtual toursim business may become a worse addiction than Bubbels for me. I'm off to look for Uluru now.

Anyone tried finding the White House [quoted text clipped - 5 lines] >in big huge letters, THIS IS THE WHITE HOUSE! After 9/11, can you blame >them? Helen is rightly "suspicious" - the US Capitol Building is pixelated (it's really obvious the closer you zoom). But the White House isn't, and neither is The Pentagon.
You can get quite clear views of various types of aircraft parked on the ground around Andrews Air Force Base (local to DC, home base of Air Force One, identified by name in "map mode"). Same with the Washington Navy Yard, the various House and Senate Office Buildings, the FBI building, etc (I think the Washington Monument looks like a big sundial on satellite mode). Just not the Capitol.
As for the lack of the identifying tags in the satellite mode, I guess someone thinks it's difficult to look at a map and then find the same thing in a satellite picture - everything you'd expect to see identified on a DC map is.
The satellite photos of DC really throw me, though. Yes, you're looking down, but has anyone gotten a feeling of also looking *backward*? You can see the north faces of a lot of these buildings you're looking down on...

This would mean that the satellite was in an orbit passing farther north than Washington, DC, rather than passing directly over Washington, DC. Such an orbit would mean that it would alternate between passing over the northern hemisphere and passing over the southern hemisphere.
