I called Gloria to ask if she'd seen him lately, and she said he was down
near the barn as of this time yesterday, so I walked down there (with
Beatrice) and sure enough, he was there. I carried his fuzzy butt most of
the way back!!
Thanks for all the purrs. Now I just hope he stays home tonight, it's too
hot to close the door.

Face it: he's a traveling man! It will take a closed door to keep him
in. Don't you have door screen that you can lock? MLB

There's a locking screen, allright. But I built it with a square hole near
the bottom specifically to enable the cats to go through.

Can you place something there that he can't move? MLB

or maybe build a small enclosure with chicken wire to allow him the OUT
without being out? I understand where you live, but you also panic (Pat)
when Abelard runs off. You have some land there; maybe an enclosure would
work?

I think I know how she feels. I get upset when I don't know where Jake and
Molly are. If life were entirely up to me, they would be happy indoor only
cats with an outside enclosure like the ones Victor's cats enjoy.
Only Charlie thinks they should be allowed out, and he has as much say in
how things are done around here as I do.
The tie breaking vote is Molly's. She has made it very clear that her
continued presence in our household is dependent on her being allowed to
come and go as she pleases. Attempts to keep her in would only make it
harder to get her to come in at least some of the time. She seems to figure
she managed quite well for a year and a half without human intervention and
could do so again if it came to that.
I'm at least thankful that we live in a place where in and out cats are
relatively safe and happy.

When we did this with Otis, he paced around like a lion all day, got really
stressed, hurt his feet trying to escape, finally escaped, and made it clear
that he had to have free roaming access or he'd pee all over my house. I
know, because I have Chester, that some cats are great being in. I also
know that we should all think that there but for the grace of God go I,
since Otis is a force unto himself. He's an outlier cat and these exist!
Not every cat can be indoors without developing a stress related illness. I
know this because I have one.
I get a little jazzed about this since I also have an outlier daughter with
certain issues that people, who haven't experieced them first hand, assume
can be readily addressed by normal means. Not every person or every cat
lies neatly in the middle of the bell curve.

I won't be living here that much longer, to make it worthwhile. Maybe after
I move somewhere else I could do that. But I don't think Abelard would like
it any more than being an indoor kitty.
I also don't think he really enjoys being gone that much, but rather stays
away due to being terrorized by Eli. I heard them fighting Monday night,
late, and that's when he decided to take off.
I've placed a couple of ads (petfinder.com, local classifieds) trying to
rehome Eli, since he picks on everyone except Beatrice, I think it would be
best if he was not here. Nobody has answered the ads and I don't expect that
anyone will. So I will try the Feliway stuff.... one of these days....

I think you should check Eli with TED before you try and rehome him. It
sounds to me like he might have some sort of health problem that's causing
him to be so aggressive towards cats that he knows well.
Just my 2p worth.

Guess Abelard was just 'born a ramblin' cat.'.
Glad he's home.

I'm so happy he's back Pat! I know all about cats who *must* go out ... and
also how agonizing it is when they do those b*st*rd cat tricks too. I'm
very very happy for both of you.
