I haven't been posting about my own family members involved in the
Katrina disaster but the time seems to have come to ask for a purr or
two. As the days go by without word, we're getting more concerned.
Two of my elderly aunts live in New Orleans and several cousins and
families live in Houma. We can't seem to get through to either place;
I've even contacted a cousin living in California to see if she might
have had more luck. She hasn't learned anything either and is equally
worried. We'd appreciate any good thoughts for their welfare. Thank
you loads.

Our prayers are with you. I know there are so many in the same
situation. Just hang on to the fact that there is NO communication out
of there. Cell phones don't work, land lines are down. They could be
fine and just can't get word out.
I was doing some surfing around, and there's a site,
http://www.nola.com, (all about New Orleans). About halfway down on the
left of the page are some links to forums (like newsgroups). People who
HAVE internet access post names of people looking for other people, etc.
They've (I guess) gone to places like the 'dome and gathered names.
There is even one section where some people have offered to make calls
for those who can't. It's a stretch, but you might want to take a look.

Urgent purrs for them to be found safe & well.
The more information that comes out of the 3 worst-affected
States the more appalling the disaster is becoming...........
Best wishes to all the dispossessed & those who care about them

Prayers offered. I am so sorry and hope you get word soon.
I heard on CNN that rescue efforts are being hampered by *citizens*
with guns. I just cannot grasp that and it is really bothering me.
ARe they not sending enough guardsmen/military/rescue down there?

This was my first reaction, as well, but when I think about it ...
Here are people who have quite possibly been seeing the dead bodies of
people they knew. They have been without food, water, or sanitation
for a few days now. I imagine it feels like a civilian Vietnam war.
These people, many of whom are no doubt traumatized and mentally ill
from what they've experienced, may feel that they will die if they do
not use force to get necessary resources like food and water. I have
also heard that some of the shooters are people demanding that the
rescuers save their families first.
If it came to a choice between saving your family or allowing
strangers to be saved, do you really know what you would do? (And of
course, by shooting, they are not saving their families. But no doubt
this is what they are thinking. As I said, they're most likely not
rational.)

Unfortunately, the amount of shooting simply wasn't expected. Yes,
looters might well resist, and they weren't a priority.
It had not been expected, however, that medical convoys needed armed
escort. Sadly, this was not the case for the evacuation of Tulane and
Charity Hospitals. They were turned back by gunfire, and patients have
died waiting for evacuation. Convoys are now going with escort.
I know both medical and military personnel heading down there. There's a
special security problem, different than the typical urban riot, that
the guards can't spread out on the ground, due to flooding. There's a
need for boats with experienced crews as well as helicopters.
Several major ships -- the large carrier Truman and the helicopter
carrier Bataan -- are heading into the area. Unfortunately, ships don't
move that fast. The Bataan is part of an Amphibious Ready Group, which
normally carries a Marine Expeditionary Unit, with a substantial number
of helicopters. Unfortunately, the ARG was in a training phase and
didn't have the Marine unit, which greatly reduced the number of
helicopters.

I recently read an article where Ham Radio operators are trying to help find
"lost" relatives. It's organized by the Salvation Army:
http://www.tsasw.org/qso/healthandwelfare.asp
It's worth a shot. I know my Dad (RB 1988, his call was KC9ED) was in ham
radio, and he helped during local emergencies in many different capacities
(finding people, organizing rescue), he even helped with the local parades
that were held in the community.
Ham radio may be "ancient", but it's wireless, a *lot* of operators have
mobile (battery operated) units and they can connect via direct
communication (radio-to-radio) as well as through the use of 'repeaters'
(similar to a cell phone, goes through transmission towers until it reaches
it's destination) and more than one person can receive the 'call' so the
message has a better chance of getting spread.

Sending good thoughts and prayers for their welfare. It is a little soon
for something of this magnitude to worry a lot over not hearing from them.
It takes almost a week to start getting lists of who is where together.
Many who are otherwise in pretty fair shape have no telephone access.

Purrs for your family and all the other victims of Katrina. The
television news has been most upsetting lately, with Katrina, the
anniversary of Beslan etc.

Lots and lots and lots of purrs for your family, Jeanne. I have some
cousins in Mandeville and Metairie; the last we heard they were leaving
for Baton Rouge, but we haven't heard from them since. It's hard to
believe how chaotic it seems to have gotten there; I am praying for
some normality to be restored, *especially* in the communications
systems.
Purrs for everyone caught up in this horrible mess.
