Poor Frank

First of all, blanket purrs all around. I've fallen behind on reading
rpca again, I have some 3000+ posts to read.

Secondly, it looks like I'll have to drag off poor Frank to TED again,
for the third time in so many weeks. He's had an upset tummy since I
started the antibiotics, and though the AB course is over (thank
goodness!), his tummy isn't back to normal yet. I've tried starving him
for 24 hours, then giving him easily-digested food like boiled chicken
and seithe. I've tried this twice, but it doesn't help. I don't dare to
starve him longer since he was aslightly anemic last time we saw TED.
Now his eyes are also running. I called the vet's today and asked if I
can bring Frank in when I take Caliban for his check-up and booster
shots on Thursday, and they said it's ok.

Poor Frank. He really, really hates going to TED these days. I feel so
bad for him.

poor Frank. I hope TED will not find any serious problems with him. I will

On the other hand Marina, if you didn't take him to TED, you would be
depriving him of the care he needs, which I'm sure you wouldn't want to do.
I hope this visit will have Frank back on the road to better health. But old

> I'm getting behind as well. Lots of get well purrs for Frank.

Thanks for the purrs, everyone. I'm battling a flu with high fever
myself, so can't sit long at the computer. Anyway, I realised today what
may have caused Frank's tummy troubles. And it's all my fault, of
course. I've bought the wrong brand of kidney dry food!

Frank gets the runs from nearly all dry food, I think he's allergic to
some sort of grains, but can't quite figure out which, since the one
brand he can eat without ill effect contains both maize and wheat
protein. I'd rather give him wet food, but he's been refusing to eat it
lately, so I tried him on the dry and he seemed to like that. But then
the bag ran out and I thought I bought a new bag of the same food, but
just realised it's not. Argh! Both bags are white with blue writing on
them, and since this was in the kidney food section, I didn't look
closely enough at the bag. I could strangle myself.

I'm still going to take Frank in and see if the vet has some suggestions
on how to make his tummy work properly again after a severe attack of
allergies. :o(

Sorry to hear that Marina.
Take care of yourself and hope you feel better soon.
Did you buy the kidney food from your vet? I buy Rusty's
prescription food from the vet. I usually call first to reserve a case. They
put it aside with Rusty's name on it.
When I pick it up, I always check to make sure they don't
give me the wrong food by mistake.
Rusty is also allergic to some food like ProPlan. But the problem
went away when I switched food. Hope Frank's tummy settles
down when he goes back to the proper food.
Purrs from Rusty going across the pond to your household.

Thanks, Krista and all of you who were thinking of Frank. He's been
through quite an ordeal.

When I took in the boys (Frank singing all the way and Caliban as quiet
as a mouse), the vet saw Caliban first. He's recovered from his eye
problem, and got his vaccination. The only problem now is a strange
patch of raw skin on his left haunch. The vet took a sample for a fungus
test, and gave me an ointment to put on the patch twice day.

Then she looked at Frank. TED decided to do a blood panel to see what
might be the cause of his diarrhoea. They gave him a mild sedative and
sent me home with Caliban because it would take a couple of hours. So I
went home and tried to proof-read a thesis that I'd promised to do by
Friday, and waited for the call. When she finally rang, TED told me
Frank was getting fluids as well as potassium, because his potassium
levels had been alarmingly low. He was slightly more anemic than a
couple of weeks ago, and some other values were a bit out of whack, too.
So what the vet wanted to do was keep him there for the fluids a couple
of hours, and then I should bring him back today (Friday) for some more
fluids and potassium supplements. I fetched Frank later and was given
(well, actually I paid for them ;oP) a whole array of medicine to give
Frank; a potassium supplement, another course of antibiotics (his
bloodwork showed there's still an infection), a paste with supplemental
bacteria for his tummy and eye drops.

Last night I managed to squirt some of the bacterial paste into his
mouth, squirt the eye drops somewhere near his eyes, and squirt his
normal hypothyroidism meds into his mouth. The potassium supplement came
as a huge pill, and they said not to crush it, so I had no idea how to
administer it to him, so didn't. They'd also given him an antibiotic
shot at TED's so I didn't have to give him those yet.

They'd left the cannule in so they wouldn't have to prick him again
today, and the place must have been a bit sore, because I touched it by
mistake (it was covered in a huge pink bandage, so I didn't even know
quite where it was on his leg), and poor Frank jumped back and hissed,
then swatted at me (which he's never done before), and then hid under
the bed, sometimes hissing to himself there. But that made it all the
more difficult to medicate him; he didn't want me near him, and I was
scared that I'd touch the sore leg again as he struggled to get free of me.

They gave me some a/d to syringe-feed him if he wouldn't eat by himself,
but he ate nearly the whole tin during the evening and night. (Miranda
sniffed it, a bit longer than any other catfood, granted, but in the end
she decided, no this is not catfood.)

Well, today I brought him in early in the mroning, and TED just rang to
say that his potassium levels are back to normal and I don't have to
give him the supplement after all! His anemia is better than yesterday,
as are his kidneys. Everything seems to have improved, except that his
neutrophil and monocyte counts are high, which TED said indicates an
infection. She did mention that it can also indicate a tumour, but she's
betting on an infection for now. I so hope she's right!

Well, I'm now off to bring home my tough old guy. We'll see if he still
hates me, and how I fare with all the meds I still need to administer.
For at least 10 days.

It could, except he loathes me at the moment. He mostly sleeps under the
bed. Luckily he comes out to eat, drink and use the litterbox. As long
as he does that, it's fine by me. It's only at medication time that I
have to get him out of there somehow, and I'm afraid I've had to resort
to the broom. I try to gently ease him along close to the end of the
bed, where I can take hold of him and pull him out, poor boy. No wonder
he hates me.

Thank you, Pam. I'm terribly worried about my special boy. I sincerely
hope this is really just an infection, and that it will get better with
the antibiotics, but taking into consideration how much weight he has
lost during the past six months, I think I have to take the possibility
of a tumour seriously into consideration. We'll see how he does after
this course of ABs is done.

I don't think he hates you, he's just annoyed by the medications. Basho
struggled a lot when we had to clean his ears twice a day for a yeast
infection. He really, really hated that. Frank will be back to his
normal loving self once he's done with his medications, you'll see. :)

It's just that the medication will never end, not completely, since I
have to give him his hyperthyroidism meds with the syringe these days
because the sour cream trick doesn't work any more. But, on a happier
note, he seems to have forgiven me. I took an afternoon nap, and he came
up on the bed and cuddled up to me and purred. :oD My Guy!

Cats can be like little kids that way.  When they perceive you have done
something bad to them, after a while they have to come and check and see if
you still love them anyway.

I'm so happy for you both. I'm sure he doesn't hate you, he just hates you
medicating him. And maybe in a while he will again want to take the

I've been doing what I maybe should have done before: shutting the door
between the living room and the bedroom for the night, leaving the
kittens out in the living room (with a litterbox, water and food). I've
brought in Frank's food bowl into the bedroom, where he can eat in peace
from Caliban. Frank likes to graze during the night, and he's been
eating very well. The kittens will just have to get used to staying in
the living room during nights. At least they have each other there (and
I can sleep more peacefully without hearing their late-night or
early-morning wrestling matches). Too bad about cuddly-boy Caliban, but
I know he likes to cuddle with Miranda, too.

I just wish he'd take some lovin', but he won't. When I drag him from
under the bed, I always just hold him a while and pet him and talk
soothingly to him before I start administering the meds, and he does
cuddle up to me, but then the good effect seems completely undone when I
start squrting foul stuff into his mouth.

I took the bandage off his leg today, and it doesn't look bad in any
way. As long as the bandage was on him, he limped a bit, but now he
walks normally. I think a bit of tape might have been stuck to his fur,
so that it pulled awkwardly when he walked.

Just heard about this as I've been away from the group for a few days. Purrs
that Frank turns back into his old self quickly.  Maybe a dose of "Waffles
extract" would get him in a lovey mood again?

Poor Frank and poor you, Marina.
Lots and lots of purrs for you to be able to medicate Frank, for Caliban's
patch to be nothing serious and for you to recover from the flu as soon as
possible,

Tell Frank we're sending soothing stomach purrs for his tummy -- have you
thought about seeing if there are any probiotic cat/dog remedies at your
health food store to replace the good tummy bacteria that probably also got
killed off by the antibiotics.  Maybe some plain yogurt might be useful.
Ask your vet, too.
many purrs,

Unfortunately, Frank doesn't like yoghurt. I've been giving him some
lactobacillus along with his thyroid meds, but it doesn't seem to work.
