Bald ear

Karen - 23 Nov 2003 18:58 GMT Pearl's right ear had a very little bald spot earlier this week. Today it has trippled in size. I will be taking her to the vet as soon as I can get in this week. There is no scabbing or redness. I had not thought it was from scratching because of that. I do think that ear is itching her. Anyone else have this happen? I know she is not a terribly happy cat and though I do everything I can think of to make her happy, I can't seem to. I don't now if that plays into it or not.

polonca12000 - 23 Nov 2003 22:37 GMT I do hope the vet finds a simple solution to Pearl's problem. Best wishes and purrs,

It's interesting because I often feel that way about Lola & Vera ...

I play with her everyday and try to give her a lot of attention, but while she accepts some petting and loving, she wants "something else" I can tell. I just don't know what that is. She seemed much more content in our old smaller apartment. She walks around meowing a lot. She's had a LOT of big changes in her life. I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. The view out the windows was probably more interesting in our old place. Even though we have BIG windows, we were four floors up with BIG trees and LOTS of birds and bats at the old place. the birds are not so close now. *sigh*. It's just a feeling basically. I can't keep her stimulated enough. I know that her leg bothers her sometimes and that probably makes her a bit grumpy. I've had grumpy cats before, but this is different. She wants *something*. She'll come up, glare at me and bite my arm as if to say "You stupid human can't you figure it out?" I don't get mad at her as it's ME that doesn't figure it out (and she does not bite hard). I don't know. I just don't think she is happy.

That means that Pearl could be entertained both night and day - how neat!
I hope that Pearl will find a way to be happy. This reminds me of Angela's cat, Gem (I haven't seen Angela post here in ages). She once said that for over a year, Gem used to beg her for something every time she she walked by her desk. Whenever this happened, Angela would give her a toy mousie from the desk, and Gem would just walk away disgusted. It turned out that all that time, Gem wanted some catnip from a baggie she kept there!

Mike's always been awfully high-strung and any change in routine *at all* can throw him off and make him just plain ornery and miserable. He is not a happy cat at holidays. Last December, when the poor darling had a UTI and urine crystals, he was pacing and spraying all over the house, but I'd put it down to the house and routines being all out of order due to Christmas. I took him to TED to checfk for urinary issues "just in case" without really thinking that was the problem. (I'm not saying Pearl's problem is physical - this is just an example of Mike's Mikeness.)
I honestly think it's just a personality thing; they're just easily stressed and edgy. Sometimes Mike will hiss and bite when he actually *wants* to be picked up and reassured, which can settle him down. I'm afraid you might just have another weirdo kitty, like I do. :-)
Could the ear baldness be overgrooming, somehow? I find it hard to picture how that could quite happen, but Pearl does sound a lot like Mike, and he tends to chew all the fur off his legs; no skin injuries, just no fur.
Anyway, we are sending soothing purrs to you and Pearl, and hope that the ear issue is something easily put right.

Mike tends to shave his fur off of strange places. I won't gross you out with the stories. Does your Mike like strange music and weird noises too? Mike was given Weird Al's CD that came out earlier this year. He has been playing it non stop ever since. I think Weird Al qualifies as strange music and weird noises.

I think Weird Al [quoted text clipped - 7 lines] > > Pam S. who couldn't resist It *must* be a Mike thing! Has your Mike ever dyed his fur blue? A bright, eye-searing blue? If he hasn't done that yet, keep him away from sidewalk chalk, or he will.
The only thing my Mike doesn't seem to have in common with yours is that my Mike is offended by noises of any kind, and takes it as a personal affront when I am wearing my Walkman. Though since I am sure I do NOT have it turned up loud enough so that Mike can hear the obnoxious racket through the headphones and across the room, because that is not what we grown-up ladies do, I assume it's because he's not used to seeing something on my head. ;-)
Thanks for the purrs; I am still sending you purrs that you have better luck having your Mike get a job than I have had with mine, the lazy little beast. :-D

No, she doesn't bother it much, so I don't think it is overgrooming, but she does seem to have itchiness deep in the ear. Maybe it's just been a couple of lucky scratches, though as I said the area is not red at all. Just bald.

We can't get into the vet until Dec. 5. It does not appear to be any kind of emergency so I'm not too antsy. I will call to see if there is a cancellation on Monday though. We can maybe get it moved up.

This is not quite the same thing, but Nikki had a spot by her eye that lost all the fur. A visit at TED's showed an exceptionally large bacterial flora in that area, and I got a salve which cleared the problem, but it's not quite clear why the bacteria suddenly decided to multiply in that area. Might be because she has quite runny eyes, and the area is always wet. That wouldn't apply to the ear, of course. Purrs that Pearl's ear gets its fur back, and it's not a symptom of anything serious. I'm sure you know how to make her happy, you're a wonderful Meowmie, Karen.

Often Nikki will be asking for something, she follows me around and purrs and meows at me, and I can't for the life of me figure out what it is she wants. I try to entertain her. Maybe she misses hunting. Running after an artificial mouse just isn't the same, is it?

You might try asking about a skin supplement; I was given DermCaps Liquid to try out and I think it helped some -- it's a fatty acid supplement. Please keep us posted. Christine

It's not an emergency, which is good. I don't know how soon I can get in. I'll post an update.

Its highly likely thats its ringworm, which is a fungal infection and easy to treat.
I get a form of it in my scalp alot if I don't use medicated shampoo. Sometimes its a bit itchy but it doesn't hurt, and looks like round areas that have dandruff in them on me. There are different forms though, and some cause the hair/fur to fall out in that patch. It *is* infectious, but not terribly dangerous.
Still, it might be something else, so it needs to be checked out.

Ah well, she seems pretty good last night and today. Played nice with the other cats both times.

WEll, I hope not, but it would be easier to fix than other things!
