We just got back from a weekend away today. A friend has been looking
after the girls for us.
When we got back we noticed that Caramel's tail isn't standing up
anymore. She seems to be able to raise the first 3 inches, but the
rest just hangs there :(
We've spoken to the friend who's been looking after them, and her tail
was fine last night when he came round, but he'd noticed she had it
down this morning.
They've been indoors while we were away, so there is no chance she
could have been hit by a car. She seems fine of herself. She is
eating and drinking normally, and doesn't appear to be in any pain.
Anyway, we immediately rang the emergency number for the vet (today is
a public holiday), described the symptoms. They've asked us to keep
her in for the rest of today, and check she is eating, drinking, and
passing urine okay, and then take her to the vet, after no breakfast
tomorrow morning. They said it wasn't worth taking her in today, as
they would only monitor her for a while, so she might as well be at
home.
Please can you send her purrs that the vet can help her, and that there
isn't any major nerve damage.
Thanks,
Kate.

Check on this possibility - did she have her tail caught in a door? This
happened to the cat of a past neighbour, who left her son in charge of house
& looking after the animals for a weekend. On her return it was discovered
that son had accidentally caught cat's tail in door as he closed it. The
tail had to be amputated as it was broken and beyond site of the break, it
was effectively dead tail. Once the operation was done, cat recovered
completely.

Major purrs on the way. It sounds like her tail was shut in a door.

Purrrs coming. On the heart group, one ladies cat had the back leg paralyzed
after throwing a clot. The good news was that after a few months, the cat is
able to use the leg a bit. Hopefully, if there is any nerve damage, maybe
she can slowly get over it. I wonder what happened, poor girl :( Mega
purrs.

Big purrs that Caramel's problem is temporary (mind you, even if
not, Vino would tell you that a bunnytail is really cute & handy).
Best wishes

It could be any number of things, including a bite to the tail that has
cause swelling and bruising.
Purrs that it's nothing too serious and easily fixed. Please let us know
what happens.

Purrs that it won't be anything serious - just a novel way of teaching
you the folly of leaving the masters behind when you leave for the
weekend.

Visited the vet this morning.
He checked Caramel over fully, and gave her an anti-inflammatory
injection.
He doesn't think her tail is broken - he thinks it is more likely she
has pulled it somehow, and has strained a nerve. As this is the case,
and because even if it is broken there isn't much they could do, he
decided not to put her through being knocked out for an x-ray, so she
was able to come straight home from the vet for her breakfast :)
As she is able to lift it a bit, and is eating, drinking and using the
litter tray without any problems, he thinks given some time it should
recover, though there is a chance it may stay as it is.
He has advised us to keep her in for a couple of weeks, and monitor her
to make sure it doesn't get any worse.
So thank you for all the purrs. Hopefully her tail will improve quite
quickly - the vet said improvement could take anywhere between a week,
and several months.
Thanks,
Kate
