Nathan has been out on his bike this morning. A wasp got under his glove and
started stinging him. OW! His thumb joint is resembling a lamb shank ;-)

Still, he'll survive!

Commiserating purrs from DH, who was able to go to work today. Do wasps
leave the stinger in, like bees? With a bee sting, you have to get it
out or it keeps pumping venom. A paste of baking soda and a ice pack
helps take the fire out.

Not usually. A bee can only sting once, then it dies. However, just
occasionally, the wasp sting can become detached from the body of said
animal. A wasp sting is still venomous for up to 30 minutes after
death (of the wasp, not the victim!).

True. Tweezers are best, grasping the tip of the sting as close as
possible to the injury. Squeezing the top venom sac will only make the
pain worse :-(

"A for B, and V for W". Alkaline (bicarbonate of soda, alka-seltzer,
milk) for bee stings, Vinegar (acid) for wasp stings.

As a kitten, Teti found it a good idea to start playing with a wasp...
Suddenly he stopped playing, and started shaking his left paw. He looked
very sad and uncomfortable with the pain, but within ten minutes he was his
old self again.

But he has never played with wasps again...

Vino got stung on the nose a few times on our balcony in Vancouver.
He never learned for long.  Within a few days he'd be back out there
chasing wasps :-(

Otis had a summer where he kept catching wasps ... and then shaking his head
and pawing at his mouth.  He must have been stung.  Over and over again.

He eventually learned.

cats are pretty smart, aren't they. I saw Sammy catch a bee one time
when she was grasshopper hunting - ever since that one time she comes
out of the flowerbed when a bee is around.

Ack, been there, done that!  A few years ago, Dennis and I were
camping in the Napa valley and I got stung on my ring finger.  I took
my wedding ring off and my finger swelled up.  But the next day, the
swelling seemed to be gone, so I put the ring back on.  I didn't want
to lose it.
Almost instantly, my finger swelled up so much that I couldn't get it
off!  We were driving to Portland that day to spend the night with my
parents who were living there at the time.  When we got there, the
finger was turning hot and purple.
The next day we set off early to drive home.  We didn't want to have
to go to the hospital in the US because we figured it would be too
expensive.  When we got back to Vancouver, we went straight to the
hospital before we even went home.  They had to cut my ring off!  The
doc said it was either my ring or my finger.
I had to get my ring fixed at the jewelery store and then the store
was robbed just minutes before I went there to pick it up.  Thankfully
my ring wasn't stolen.
A month later, I was stung again at a car wash.  Same finger!  I took
the ring off instantly and kept it off for a week!
Purrs for Nathan.
