She loves her millet! And flax seed. Fresh veggies, too. I buy kale for
her, and carrots, and she adores Gala apples (she won't touch the green
'Granny Smith' or the 'Red Delicious' - apparently they aren't delicious).

I'm with Peaches on the Gala apples. They are a favourite with my geese
Shylock and Enid too. They are put to bed in their hut with a bowl of
wheat, chopped apples and two rounds of bread in small pieces.
I sometimes get apples from my neighbours from their trees. None of them
grow Gala, so the geese sulk when they are offered them.
You should see a sulking goose. They are big sulkers ;-)

Picture this, then. Imagine the geese have had Gala apples for the past
week which I have purchased for them, they are sweet, as you know. But I
have run out of them and my neighbour gave me some (still dessert apples
unknown variety, not cookers) so I thought they would be just as good. I
chop them.
I go down to the orchard to give Shylock & Enid - although it was just the
same with Honk - a snack. They are at the far end so I have to call them.
I have taught them to come to call which was useful once when they went
missing.
They come hurtling as fast as their flat feet can bring them, flapping their
wings on the way to make it even faster. They arrive at the gate, I throw
them the chopped apples and they fall upon them. They pick pieces up and
start to chew them with their serrated beaks. Then they let the bits drop
from their beaks back on to the ground. What kind of rubbish apple is
this???
They turn and look at me with their scathing bright blue eyes and march away
back down the orchard leaving the apples for the chickens to eat. They hate
me :-(

That reminds me to ask. How is Shylock doing? Is he OK with his new mate?

They seem to be getting along well, and Shylock will share his food more
readily with her now. Enid walks about two feet behind when he is on the
move like a good goosewife should. She was only hatched last year so
Shylock is older than her, he must be about 2 or 3 now.
He was used to an older woman - Honk was 21..
Thanks for asking.

Now you've got a digital camera, maybe you could post some pictures of your
geese and chickens. I'd love to see them.

Unfortunately I can't yet, the poultry are down the garden where the tree
cover is almost total, I did try, but no good, too dark for the camera. I'm
afraid you'll have to wait until winter ;-)
If you happened to be impatient you could google the chicken breeds I have,
Appenzeller Spitzhauben, Lakenfelder, Sicilian Buttercup/large fowl/ and
Barnevelder bantams.
Shylock is a pure Emden. Enid is..well..once upon a time my grandfather met
one and then a grey goose came along and then..a white one and then I turned
out blue and white..
Who cares, as long is he's happy with her ;-) which he seems to be.
I was hoping for another Emden though I have to admit.

Millet and flax seed, sound like my diet or am I becoming a bird?
I love red delicious.
I am also planning to include kale in my diet. Jill, do you have
any suggestion how to cook it?

I'm told it should be treated as you would spinach - steamed until just
wilted, etc. I don't care for the taste of kale myself. And maybe you are
turning into a bird! :)
