Well, it's been about a year since that stupid TED said Francis needed to be
euthanised due to acute kidney failure. Good job Vernon, Nathan & I stood
our ground and it's a good job Francis has ignored TED's pronouncements on
not living more than a few days.

Francis has his beta-blocker pill once a day and ordinary senior cat food.
Francis thrives.

Francis is at his normal weight. Francis has bright eyes and is alert.
Francis is his usual happy self. Francis goes out into the garden & adjacent
field hunting mice and rabbits - successfully. Francis exhibits no signs of
ill-health, but oodles of good-health ones.

Long may this continue!

Cheers, helen s

Absolutely! I was wondering how he was doing the other day. So glad he
proved that idiot wrong. Is he stil a tree-hugger? Frank has pretty much
given up this hobby.

Aye, he still does his best eco-warrior mode trick of zooming about like a
mad thing and taking a flying leap at a tree, to land spread-eagled on it,
in best tree-hugger fashion :-)

As an aside, do you know where the term 'spread-eagled' comes from - it's
not pretty!

Just shows how words adapt & change meaning over the years :-)

OK, I couldn't find it and I'm morbidly curious, where did the term come
from?

Scroll down for the answer.... to protect the squeamish...

Viking torture/punisment. The victim was tied up, arms out wide, legs out
wide. Cuts made in the back & the lungs pulled through the cuts so they hang
out the back like shrivelled wings...

Not nice.

Technically, I think that's the blood eagle, and spread eagle probably
comes from being tied up for flogging and, well, the easiest way to draw
an eagle as a heraldic device to make sure everyone knows it's an eagle
and not, say, a starling.

But the blood eagle was my first thought too, so I looked it up. I found
one site that claimed it might simply have been a literary device (the
description is found in a saga), although with the vikings, well, you
never know, it does sound kind of like their sort of thing. (I'm
paraphrasing).

I suppose the author of the site, like me, was taught and read a lot of
history which, naturally enough given my origins, tended to be of the
'From the fury of the Northmen, good Lord deliver us' variety. Now, I
understand, the vikings are said to have been much misunderstood (mostly)
peaceful traders who hardly every looted and tortured. I suspect the truth
is somewhere between the extremes.

It _really_ comes from heraldry.  A spread eagle is the figure of an
eagle with its wings and talons out spread.

I'm speechless that such a thing can happen (and I remember it so well). It
is obvious that it is more important to trust your own instincts and not
give up even if a vet says so. I'm so happy for all of you! May Francis
continue to enjoy living with you for a very long time just like you enjoy
his company.
Lots of best wishes,
