When I was making up the contract to rent this place, my landlord gave
me permission to have an enclosure built in the little garden attached
to the flat. I asked the building manager for his permission, and today
I received it, in writing, no less.
Sooo, I called a company that makes enclosures for cats
(http://www.kolumbus.fi/levatop/tuotteet.htm, click on the pics for
larger ones), and the guy said he'll come and check out the garden
tomorrow. No additional cost, though it's Saturday. Wow.
My niece, or rather, my sister had their balcony netted by this company,
and they were very happy with the result (so are Kasper, Kira and Emil).
Now I just have to decide which furnishings I want. I'm so happy for the
cats! :o)
Oh, re the indoor/outdoor discussion, I wouldn't let my cats roam free
around here, because we're in the middle of the city, and there are two
very busy streets nearby, as well as a railway line for heavy goods. I'm
afraid I'm also cynical about people. There are lots of people who try
to boost their weak self-esteem by torturing small helpless animals.

I highly recommend natural logs, with bark. Cats *love* to scratch on
those. Ours also love sissal rope covered columns, those are great for
climbing and scratching.
Of course, we'll be expecting pictures of the design and the contruction
process. :)

My heavens, these are *sooooo* nice!!! I would be very excited too, Marina.
The *only* thing that would concern me (for my area) is the strength of
these enclosures. We have foxes and coyotes (only rarely). Also, I would
be concerned about other cats coming up and upsetting mine. But I tell you,
I have never seen such nice 'play areas' for the kitties.
You'll have to show us pictures, for sure!!!!

I'd be excited too. I wish I could close in my balcony. I just can't figure
out anything that won't be too obtrusive for the building policy. :( Can't
wait to hear all about it. THose are really neat.

The building manager sounded so negative when I first rang him to ask
permission that I was almost sre I wouldn't get it. That's why it was
such a huge surprise to get his e-mail today with permission. I think it
helped a lot that I could show him these pictures.

Wow. Those are *nice*, about the nicest I've ever seen. What a perfect
solution for kitties go out outside safely. Lucky cats!
When we built the enclosure for my daughter, the most fun part was
"furnishing" it. We got a dead tree for climbing, some carpeted ramps
and such.

The company that makes the enclosure sells some of that stuff that you
see in the pictures. I thought I'd get at least a cat tree, a couple of
shelves that hang on the walls, and one of those kitty ladders. I'd love
to have a natural tree or logs, but don't know where I could get them.

I'd suspect your friendly local hardware store could get you a bit of a
tree or a log. Or you could inquire directly at Puukeskus, for example.
They may not have unprocessed logs on stock, but certainly would know
where to get some for you. Their website is located at www.puukeskus.fi.
And of course I'll have to direct you to the nearest K-rauta store, in
Helsinki they are at Herttoniemi, Oulunkylä and Ruoholahti (see details
under www.k-rauta.com), and there's a Rautia-store at Malmi
(www.rautia.fi). Their building material department would be the place
to ask for this sort of thing. (and they'll call my colleague, Lasse
Ranta, who'll tell them...;))

Heh, Christine, great minds think alike. I already checked out their
websites except Puukeskus (didn't remember that that existed). That's a
good tip. The next problem is how to transport a log or a tree...

If I wanted a piece of a tree, a nice log or stump, I'd call my favorite
firewood dealer and have him bring me an unsplit chunk of the right size
with bark on. They are all set up to deliver. Might work for you.

They'd transport it for you, for a reasonable cost, of course.

I'm happy for the cats and I'm happy for you. I hope we'll soon be
seeing lots of pictures of the cats enjoying their new enclosure.

I went and looked....but the website appears written in jibberish! ;o)
;o)
Seriously though, they look great. An enclosure is a godsend, and was
for us in Belize. It meant that the cats could spend as much time as
they wanted outside and in safety without me worrying.

I can imagine being outside in Belize mght be a tad more dangerous than
in the UK.

that is great news:-) I'm so happy for you and your cats. We waited 5 years
to get a fence around our garden to let the cats out safe:-) We don't
regret it. The cats have changed since. They are happier than ever, more
relaxed and more playful.
When it is ready, please post pictures:-)))

Hi Inge, I read your account of when your cats went out for the first
time. Very funny! Of course, Frank and Miranda have spent time outside
on the island, but it will be a new experience for Caliban.

Very nice Marina. Your kitties are very lucky to have such a thoughtful

Congrats!!! I can see why you're so excited. I'm going to have Rob look at
these pictures and see if there are any of the furnishings that he can/will
want to make for our clowder.
