Persia can't stand it (can any cat?) when I strip the bed to wash the sheets
(as I just did) and replace them with fresh ones.  Even before I really got
started, she was wide-eyed, watching... oooh, you know what's gonna happen!

It's very difficult to change the sheets on my bed.  It's a king sized
soft-side waterbed and I've got deep king sheets to fit it.  But that top
mattress is still heavy as hell and, sadly, I didn't notice when I moved in
here before filling it, they'd placed it too close to the wall.  I can't get
the fitted sheet nice and snug up by the wall without removing my ring and
scraping my fingers.  Combine trying this maneuver with a cat who thinks
it's all great fun and you have me swearing, laughing, swatting and being
swatted in return.  Then of course, she has to get under the sheet(s).

Before it gets cold outside I really need to drain this slowly leaking
sucker and buy a regular King mattress... might have to take out a loan.
heheh.  I can't seem to find just a mattress; everyone wants to sell me the
box spring and frame, too.  I don't need those!

Oh well, at least I have the fresh sheets and pillow cases on the bed now
and the dirty ones are chugging away in the washer.  And Persia had her
happy fill of changing the sheets with Mommy :)

Jill.... you might consider buying 2 twin mattresses (you can buy those
without buying the box springs)...They work great as a king-size...even
better if you have a waterbed wooden box frame(keeps twins together)...It's
also alot cheaper to buy twin fitted sheets!....That's what we did.......
Now if I could only find a Double X King Size to accommodate all the
kitties... and I!!!!!!! :-) Liz

Mine is not the wooden frame.  It's a regular metal frame with a king box
spring on the bottom and a waveless king mattress on top.  I've seen those
things you can insert in the middle to "connect" 2 twins.  I'll have to do
some measuring.  I'm still not sure that would be wide enough for this
frame, but I'll check it out.  Gotta make some money first ;)  Thanks!

I just had to buy a king-sized mattress and we're going to be paying for it
for *YEARS*!  But I really had no choice - a 20-year-old, sagging mattress
just doesn't go well with degenerative disk disease and fibromyalgia (I've
spent the last 4 weeks sleeping on the futon in my sitting room).

We went to Foleys' "lowest prices of the year" mattress sale, chose one of
the lower-end mattresses, got 15% off for the sale, got another 10% off for
using our Foley's card, and *STILL* spent $1,048.89!!!!!  That's freaking
ridiculous.  I keep telling myself I'll spend 1/3 of my life laying on it,
but still - sheesh!!!

<BIG SIGH>  We just can't seem to catch a break financially - I've resigned
my self to never retiring, I'll just work until I drop at my desk (if I'm
lucky and they let me).

Bitties LOVE when we change the sheets!  It is such great fun to make
cat sized bumps under them!  It is like being in a box!

(We are afraid one day we will overlook the catshaped lump and leave
them trapped under the sheets!

Catnipped:  My allergist was appalled to learn that the mattress I
slept on was upwards of 30 years old...When DP and I got our first
place (previous to that I'd been sleeping on dorm beds, my former
landlord's son's bed, cots, friends' couches, or a camp pad, depending
on what was available where I was staying) my parents bought us a
mattress as an ersatz "wedding gift".  My first new mattress ever.

Yes, you are spending 1/3 of your life on that mattress--it is a
worthwhile investment.

(But I know the feeling.  All my joy at having a summer job has faded

clothing has faded in the face of car repairs, increased rent, etc.
There's something wrong about winning a job and working hard in order
to maintain a low standard of living...when the reason you sought the
job is to live better.)

Just think what it would have felt like if the car repairs and increased
rent had arrived *without* you getting the job!

I found that it takes quite a while after starting a new/better job before
you realize that the normal swing between months with extra bills and
months with a few dollars left over for fun has gradually shifted so that
the expensive months are easier to handle and the months with a few extra
dollars left over come more frequently.

Months?  I had a ten week contract.  It ends today.

Ah well.  In two weeks I'll be teaching again....so I don't have to
fret about income...I'm just stuck at my
$100-a-week-after-food-and-rent again, unless I can pick up some odd
jobs on the side.  And so much of that $100 gets sucked up in gas....

Oh, ten weeks isn't long enough to make long term differences. I was
thinking of getting, say, a year-long contract (does anyone get full-time
long-term work any more?) after a period of unemployment.

That sounds great, well, except for the bit about buying gas.

Yeah, I hate living from paycheck to paycheck and never feeling like I'm
getting ahead.  Normally I deal with it better since this has been happening
to me my entire life - but I'm still feeling a bit down (I see my doctor
next Wednesday - AT LAST!!).

I just changed the sheets, too. Imagine not one, but two curious kittens
'helping' with that. I end up with two bed bumps under the covers. When
I made the bed this morning, I had just thrown the cover over the bed,
when two heads poked out on the side. So cute! No time to get the
camera, of course.

Oh, and I finally got my new bed all assembled, so I don't have to sleep
on a mattress on the floor any more. Mmmmmm, I slept so well last night!

Nothing perks the ol' Stink up like changing the bed.   I got a new
cover for the day-bed (Stinky's special property) last week, and I
think he rolled all over every inch of it. ;)

Is it really hard to buy a king mattress only?  Our bed doesn't go
with a box spring and we will want the mattress only.  I hope we don't
run into problems!

Just a suggestion for saving money. I once designed my own king sized
mattress, sectioned so could be like a sofa bed, and had very high
density foam made to order. Much, much cheaper than a king sized
mattress. Also, it's best if they cover it with some made to order
fabric. Don't know now but it was about 1/4th the price of a king
mattress back when I had it done. Very light. Can move it easily.
Portable. If it's too foamy, a cotton futon makes it heavenly. And now
back to the regularly scheduled postcasts...

I love sleeping on futons.  We slept on one for 5 years in Vancouver.
Our mattress here in Thailand is made of something like foam over a
coconut husk core.  It's very comfy too.  I actually don't really like
the spring mattresses very much.  Dennis has this weird habit of
lifting his leg about an inch while he sleeps and then dropping it
down.  This makes a spring mattress jiggle and it wakes me up.  But
Dennis says he wants a proper mattress when we move to Australia.  He
says he should have a proper mattress because it would be better for
his back.  I guess we'll have to see what's available once we get over
there.

I dislike spring mattresses too. I had one which was getting uncomfortable
- I almost never get backaches unless I have been sleeping on too-soft
mattresses. I had previously slept on thin foam mattresses in the usual
student residence type places, and liked them. So, not knowing about the
possibility of having a foam mattress made, and wanting something a bit
thicker than cheap student mattresses, I went to a local store and bought
a foam set, the firmest one they sold, and actually one of the few they
sold. I've been using it ever since, turning it regularly to even out the
wear, and I expect it to last for years yet.
