Cat races

A friend of mine and me were sitting over a beer last night, and after a
while we started talking about cats. We often do that..

Yestaerday's theme was a bit special: How would a cat race be? You know,
there are horse races, dog races, and even turtle and rabbit races where the
purpose is to run as fast as possible over a distance to get first to the
goal. Horses like running just for the running, dogs like to run after an
artificial rabbit, I guess rabbits like to run for the lettuce held by their
owners at the end of the racing field, what turtles like running for is just
beyond my imagination...

But what would twelve cats do?

Suggestions appreciated!

My friend and I had a lot of scenarios on this, but all of them came down to
that it would be impossible. After a few meters, the leading cat would lose
it's interest in the stuffed mouse up front and go down to cat no. 3 to
check out what the guy meant by the last remark he gave. No. 4 got
interested in the lovely queen in the last position, and no. 5 and 6 started
hunting a butterfly that came in their way... Or would it work out fine? We
just wonder... Oh, three of the cats wouldn't even get to the starting point
because the thought that it was time for a nap...

I dunno...if you opened a can of tuna and promptly dropped it on the
floor, I can imagine cats zipping towards you from all over.

(Or maybe you'd have to customize bait for each cat.  Nox won't run for
any food, but Smokey goes Olympic for pizza.)

Otherwise, very hard to motivate cats to run, much less all run in one
direction.  Have you ever heard the expression "like herding cats"?

I still love that EDS commercial "cat herding".  Quite an original concept!

Well, the expression has been around for decades, but that EDS
commercial is the only time I have seen someone actually portray it.

Senator Trent Lott has just published a memoir called "Herding Cats."
