A cool map thing shown to me by a friend...

Here's what you do.  Use the slider to the left to zoom in by pushing the
curser up.  You can actually zoom to a street level!  You may have to adjust
the map by using the up/down/left/right arrows as the map gets larger as you
zoom in.  Pinpoint where you are and click to add your 'marker'.  Put your
name and a comment; URL if you have one and select an icon to represent you.
Sorry, they don't have cat icons :(  If you mess up and need me to delete
something, let me know.

I was very tempted to do it and got zoomed right to my road and position.
Then I remembered the weirdoes that lurk and are posting here again and I
changed my mind.

I just positioned mine within a few blocks. I figure that's close enough.

Actually about all Allons is is a post office.  I live 10 miles by
road from Dale Hollow Lake (just over the hill behind the house as the
crow flies).

LOL That tells me nothing!  Maybe it was meant to ;)  I don't know anything
about other parts of TN.  I've been to Jackson (north of Memphis) and to
Nashville (middle-ish of the state) but nothing beyond that.

I wondered about that, Gordon!  You can move it by clicking and dragging to
where you want in the UK and zoom in closer and closer by moving up one step
at a time in the left hand marker.
Have another try and post again if you can't quite fathom it yet.

How cool! After I'd plopped myself in the general vicinity, I had a
closer look and played with the zoom. If I zoom in as close as
possible, then switch to the satellite image, I can even see my
*house*, plus our little catfish pond just north of it.

Oh wow, I didn't realize that it zooms in so much closer on the
satellite image.  Cool!  I'm rather pleased, I've pinpointed myself
quite accurately.  To the left you can see the big airport.  That's
where Dennis used to work.  It's a huge military base where they used
to refuel the B-52's during the Vietnam war.  They also had a lot of
US military cargo planes through there after the tsunami.
At the inland end of the runway is a little lake, you can see it.
It's called Crater Lake.  It was formed when a B-52 crashed on takeoff
and exploded.  Made a huge crater!
My town doesn't look like much on there.  It's really grown lately!  I
wonder how old the image is.  Anyway, trolls keep away from my house!
I've got security guards.  And an attack cat ;-)

I couldn't zoom in on western Australia either in the map view (all I
got was a series of blank screens), but when I tried switching to
satellite view I had no problem zooming right in on my street. I can
pick out my own house quite clearly. I actually put my marker in a big
vacant lot in my general area, but it's close enough. Britta, you're
probably the only one who might realise my marker's not quite spot on as
you've been here!

LOL!  I'm going to have to check that out, too bad it takes so long
for each view to load due to my slow connection.  I might have been
there, but I doubt I could recognize your house from a satellite
photo!
I went to the Margaret River area to see the area where we'll be
moving to.  But it was like Thailand, it only lets you zoom in so far
before it says that detailed info isn't available.  Still, it was cool
to see :-)

Argh! From the satellite picture I can see that I've plopped myself down
in Espoo, which is just west of Helsinki. Could you please remove me,

No! Don't remove the marker for the island! I've actually managed to
smack it down right on the island, though on the other side of it from

Say, while you're "visiting" Espoo, do look in on my favorite hockey
player, would you? ;o) He's played in Philadelphia for the past several
years, but he'll be with the Espoo Blues this season. Neil's fans here

Christine, it's the same picture all the time, doesn't get lighter when
it's light outside. But when you zoom in, you do get more detail. At
last the streets are lit up.

OK, now I'm on the map too. Turned the screen up bright and followed the
train track far enough, then I went in closer and followed streets. We
might be moving in the near future tho, but the marker's approximately
where we are now. It's a cool map! :)

After reading the messages from Sherry and Britta I went back to play
a little more. I find I actually placed myself up in the Wildlife
Refuge (or maybe Fort Sill) north of Lawton. Actually closer to where
Pam and the Shirk family camped during their epic journey across
country than home. Maybe Sammy influenced the placement and is trying
to tell me she wants to go for a ride to visit the prairie dogs ;-)

I'll delete your entry so you can try again! (Scotland is very nice... and
I've never been there LOL)

Bugger it, I'm on twice, and somewhere in the North rather than London,
I can't figure it out at all, it says errors on page and I give up and
I'm going to have a hissy fit - so there!

You're in the sea, too!  <grin>

Yeah, that's wishful thinking, cos I want to live near the sea one day,
so I did that on purpose (LOL) honestly!

Don't you mean you're going to have a "hisspit?"  LOL  Want me to delete you
or just leave you there?

Delete me please, unless you can put me in London, but it all looked a
bit cramped down there, so I thought I'd hop into the water for a bit.

Hoping it's cool water!  It's so hot here I would like to transport myself
to London or anywhere in the British Isles, post haste!  I actually ran a
hose over myself yesterday (yes, I was wearing a swimsuit so as not to
embarrass myself or my neighbors).  At any rate, I've deleted your entry.
Try again!  Not to worry if you don't get down to street level :)

I had an awful time placing mine.  Anything zeroed in beyond three or
four clicks would cause the computers (yes, I tried on several
machines) to crash or freeze.

At any rate, while my placement isn't street-level accurate, my icon is
now sitting all alone on the eastern coast of Canada.

This is a very cool toy.   :-)

I seem to have ended up a fair bit north of where I thought I was
putting myself, but that's okay.  My teeny little town didn't seem to
be on the map, anyhow, and all the satellite image showed was vast
stretches of green.  Anyway, greetings from somewhere in southeast
Georgia USA!

Right that's it, I'm definately not playing any more, I finally worked
out how to do it, even got to put my marker on my actual street, and it
bloody crashed. Grrr
Gabey8 - 25 Aug 2005 12:26 GMT
Thanks for removing my original marker, Jill!

Now that I realize that you can zoom THAT close and be THAT precise with a
marker, instead of just plopping one down on "Philadelphia" and hoping for
the best, I put one on my home-away-from-home: the arena where the
Phantoms (of the American Hockey League) play their home games. I figure
that for the amount of time I spend in there, that might as well be where
I place the map indicator. :o)

Great idea! I just put myself on the map!

I saw that some people were worried about the map being so detailed that it
would be possible to find them too easily... No problem on the Norwegian
part of the map, absolutely no counties, cities or streets are shown on the
map.... If you want to visit me, just send me a mail instead.

My marking is placed as accurate as I could, at the end of the Oslo Fjord...

Sorry Jill,

I didn't mean to send you personally a mail. I pressed the wrong
button <sigh>

Please, excuse my mistake.

Hi,

I finally made it to the map. It's hard to place an icon on the german
map. I'm not sure whether I put it right. I think the river rhine is
wrong on the map, I might as well be a bit more west to the dutch
border. I put a second icon on the US eastside. That's where my
relatives live, and where I stay when I'm in the US. Actually, I was
able to place the icon on the exact house :-)))

Thank you for the map, Jill :)

Purrs, Petra
