I was talking with a friend this morning. A cat was hit by a car in front
of their house the other day. They don't know the name, but it belongs to
some people up the street who allow it out a lot of the time, and were out
of town themselves at the time. The cat was able to pull itself off the
road into shelter under a step. My friends' family, the driver and the
neighbours called a couple vet clinics, which were closed, and then tried
the humane division of the city, which eventually sent a young worker. She
retrieved the cat and took it to a vet to be stabilized until the owners
can be reached to decide what treatment to authorize. They've managed to
locate a relative of the owners, but not the owners themselves. The cat
probably has a broken hip, and maybe a spinal injury, so it doesn't look
good.
Every summer, a new crop of cats show up on the streets of my
neighbourhood, an area with a lot of traffic and a fairly mobile
population, mostly students, moving in and out. Then you start seeing all
the notices about missing cats, and when the winter comes, the survivors
are inside, sitting at windows. Next summer, there'll be mostly new cats
hanging around. A few of the outdoors cats get through more than a single
summer. Some, like my Mandy, are probably converted to indoors cats after
surviving an accident. And the others,... <sigh>

My ex's neighbor has 7 cats and they are all indoor / outdoor cats. They live a block off
a main thoroughfare plus the street they live on is a pretty busy street. I do not know
how many times I have seen the cats narrowly being hit as they cross the street. At least
his are all "fixed". Another neighbor has a male that was never "fixed" so he has become
mostly an outdoor cat because he sprays now. Who know how many kittens he has made!!!
I wish I could shake some sense into these idiots and get them to take care of their cats
or find someone to take them that would !!

What angers me is the way the owners *went out of town* and left their cat
outside! The relative doesn't seem to spend much time at the house,
although the neighbours did manage to find her so she may have been
keeping a very casual eye on the place and the cat.

Be careful about jumping to conclusions! Of course, I
don't know the circumstances with your neighbor's cats, but
until I moved here, my cats were always indoor-outdoor, with
their own private entrance. When I went on vacation, I'd
hire someone to come in and feed them and play with them
twice a day, but the cats were free to come and go as
always. That did NOT mean I "left them outside" when I went
away!

A house is not a home, without a cat.

There are still a lot of people who think that cats are
low-maintenance, or worse, self-maintenance pets.
Purrs for the poor thing.
