Just some minor news, but since everyone was wondering, Betty's back
home from her biopsy this morning. She's acting fussy, not wanting to
be held for long, and wandering around the house fretting, which is a
bit unusual for her, but it's understandable.
Betty's missing a couple of teeth, and has two stitches on her chin,
and is coming around begging for brief cuddles every once in a while.
Looking at her, it's sad for me to think that next time I take her to
TED, I may be asking her to give up part of her jaw.
I spoke with the surgery vet on the phone, and he told me that
visually, it did look like the growth is a malignant tumor, and the
results from the biopsy will probably be back around Monday or so,
which is considerably sooner than I was originally told. He said that
removing the tumor would mean that Betty would have to adapt to
missing part of her jaw, but usually cats are pretty resilient. Also,
he said that these types of tumors are usually resistant to
chemotherapy, but radiation treatment might be an option.
The vet's name sounded familiar, so I asked him if he remembered
giving a talk on parasitic worms to a grade school class 20 years ago
(actually, it was more like 19 1/2 years ago). He said that he
probably did. I told him that I was one of the children sitting in
the front row, and asked him a question about nematodes. Small world!

Tak, thanks for letting us know how Betty's holding up.
I can empathise with how worried you are--during Comet's last year she
(of the bad teeth and gums) had to have her last canine extracted and
TED warned me that he was having a particularly bad-looking tissue
sample examined for possible carcinoma. It really agonizing waiting
days for the results, which did turn out to be negative. I hope for the
best of outcomes for you and Betty!

So far, everyone's opinion has been that it's malignant, but I'm at
least hoping that they'll find the tumor confined enough that they can
remove it without severely reducing her quality of life, and that
she'll be able to live a more or less normal lifespan after that.
Maybe that's asking a lot.

Well, I think that with so many people all over the globe sending good
karma, the chances of it coming out relatively ok are good!
We'll keep purring.

Continued purrs for Betty's recovery and your peace of mind. Good that
the results will be back quickly anyway. Cats are incredibly resilient -
having seen quite a few rescue cats with various ailments, missing body
parts (mostly a leg) they are very stoical about being ill, and probably
take it much better than the human caring for them, not knowing the
implications of what is happening.

the malignancy will be successfully excised and you'll have many
more happy years together.

The biopsy will tell for sure. In the meantime, Betty seems to be
happy. She was so tired and sleepy that she didn't want to get off me
this morning. Later, she begged to go upstairs (I usually don't use
the upstairs rooms, except occasionally as guest rooms or study rooms)
so keep the stairs closed off).
I was advised to continue giving Betty antibiotics since she just had
her teeth pulled, so I went upstairs to fetch her. She was stretched
luxuriously on a dining chair in the sunny corner room. I picked her
up, brought her downstairs, and let her sniff the antibiotics bottle.
This is my signal to let her know what I was going to do.
She watched me lay down the towel I use to restrain her. Her eyes got
big and she started to trot away, but I just grabbed her butt and
plopped her on the towel. I rolled her around and around, making the
cutest burrito. :) She was very good about her meds, and I brushed
her and praised her and gave her treats. She purred and headbutted.

I came in late to this as I've been away, but many many purrs and

That she surely has.
I've been thinking about a post you made before, about Betty's whiskers
being broken on one side. Is this the side she has the problem on?

That's a good observation. It is on the same side, and it started
happening maybe two weeks before any other symptoms were evident.
Maybe she was rubbing that side because of the irritation in her jaw.
I think it's a reasonable conclusion, but I haven't actually seen how
Betty breaks her whiskers, so I'm not sure. Betty tends to change her
behavior when I'm around her. If she sees me, she'll do things like
hop on her tree ("Brush me"), meow and follow me ("Where have you
been?"), sit in front of me ("Aren't I pretty").
