I called all over the darn place today and found a program called PASS (what
it stands for I have no idea). They mail out vouchers for a free spay or
neuter to low income houses. Yay, we passed! Then they whooshed me along
to a place about 45 minutes away who works with them to claim the voucher
AND get the animal shots, deworming, ear mites, rabies, etc. It costs $37
USD. Gosh, my other house cats cost $150 USD EACH! My mother-in-law paid
for those. :~)
We have an appointment for the 27th. I'm hoping she'll stick around that
long. So far, so good.

Thank you! I couldn't have lucked out more. I think this cat is going to

anyone know what I mean?

That is great news that you were able to get help with spaying your
surprise guest... when DP found the bits, he spent a chunk of his
student loan for med school on getting them spayed and vaccinated.
Naughty MomDad! for naughty bitties!

You know, my eyes might be deceiving me since she's so skinny, but
with those blue eyes, and the shape of her face, she looks distinctly
part-Meezer to me.

There *is* a stray Siamese that wanders around; it's possible she's an
offspring. There are sooooooo many strays in my area. It's sad. Thanks to
me, there are now 3 fewer strays; my other two were born in my shed and I
gave them a home.

Where I live, the Humane Association has a program called SNAP (Spay Neuter
Assistance Program), you have to have a total household income of less than
$20,000/year to qualify, and there's a mazimum number of vouchers per
houshold (I don't remember that number). They only pay a portion of the
cost of the spay/neuter, from $20-45 depending on the type of animal & the
gender (lots of vets charge less for male neutering than they do for female
spaying). One of my duties when I do my volunteer work is to enter all the
applications into an Excel database so they can track where the money goes.
Last week, someone had filled out their application for their animal, and
they entered "pit bull/jack russel terrier mix" for the breed of animal -
can you imagine what that kind of critter would look like - or even act???
There's be a little dog with a huge head bouncing around...LOL

Here in Saginaw, Michigan, USA the Humane society will give certificates for getting cats
"fixed". My mother-in-law had like 10 or 11 done and it did not bost her a thing. If you
want meds for pain afterwards it costs you extra. The reason she had so many is that she
took in 2 female strays that were both pregnant!!

Driving home from town last night I had an idea for you, to perhaps help the
flea situation without bathing her or using a chemical.
Since she is going to be outside anyway, maybe try dusting her fur with
garlic powder. Be sure it is fresh and powdered, not granulated. You could
put granulated garlic in gooshy food, it is not as strong tasting as the
powder.
Karen - 18 Aug 2005 15:27 GMT
Garlic is debatable of being good or bad for cats. But brushing and combing
would certainly help.

Garlic is said to drive off fleas.

She's only going to be outside until the vet checks her, treats her and she
gets the okay to come in and meet kili's other two kitties. With the PASS
voucher thing, she doesn't have an appointment for the kitty until 8/27.
Meanwhile, she's feeding and watering it (gosh, that makes the cat sound
like a plant!) and making sure she's taken care of. I'd send her some money
to help with the vet bills but I don't have any to spare. I just hope this
cat checks out negative for diseases; she's already won kili's heart.

I understand all that; I've been following the thread. I thought she might
appreciate a way to possibly lessen the flea problem without having to bathe
or treat the cat with chemicals. After all, she only has ten days to get the
cat strong enough to withstand major surgery.
