Betty - possible bone cancer

Thread view:

Takayuki - 16 Aug 2005 18:15 GMT
Last night, Betty started smacking her lips and occasionally rubbing
at her jaw, which was unusual, so I checked her mouth and found that a
lower fang seemed to be slightly misaligned.  I set up a vet
appointment this morning to have it looked at.

The vet found that the tooth was very loose, and Betty's lower jaw
seems to be swollen, and the bone misshapen.  She thinks that it is an
aggressive form of bone cancer.  Betty was given an x-ray to see if
the cancer has spread.  Her chest and organs seemed to be clear.

Betty is scheduled for a bone biopsy on Thursday.  Results will come
back about 10 days after that, and then Betty may be referred to the
local veterinary oncology center.

In case the jaw area is infected, Betty is to be given liquid
antibiotics.  It must taste pretty bad, because she's never struggled
with me as much as when I gave her some.  Her normally pristine white
ruff was spotted with pink saliva from the blood coming from the
inflamed area of her jaw.

I'm terribly worried about my little baby Betty.  I don't know what
happened - she seemed so normal, and then there was just a little lip
smacking.

Poor baby! We will definitely be keeping Betty in our purrs, and will be
looking forward to hearing more when the results come back.

It is incredible the things that seemingly innocent behaviors can turn up.
Cleo started making grimacing faces late last week, and it turned out to
be due to a tumor in her mouth. The vet believes it has been forming for a
while, so she had been uncomfortable for a while but didn't do anything to
show it.

I haven't been posting much lately, but I am so glad that Cleo is
feeling better.  It's true that these things seem to happen so
quickly.

Oh, Tak, that's very worrying. We will be purring hard that turns out to
be 'just' an abscessed tooth or something else easily treatable. Poor
Betty! Poor you! We will be thinking of you both. Please keep us updated.

They seem to feel that it's low probability that it's a bone
infection, higher probability that it's a fibrous tumor, and the
highest probability is that it's a bone cancer.

After I gave Betty the antibiotics and she ran away, she came back to
me a few moments later, smacking her lips as badly as ever, and
sniffing my tears with a concerned air.  I hope that we'll be together
for a long time.

It was a terrible surprise, but having her with me is comforting.
We'll just move forward with the biopsy surgery in a couple of days,
and if the results are bad, I'll weigh the treatment options and do
whatever I can.  I'm her designated slave, after all.

Oops, have to get back to work!  After I brought Betty back home, I
lingered at home a bit, because I needed to be alone with Betty.

Tak,
Is there any way your vet would go ahead and give you a referral to the
oncology center? Sometimes they can know "by a look and a touch" whether
you're dealing with cancer or not and might be able to set your mind at
rest.

Thank you for the advice.  Based on what you said, I called the vet
and the oncology center.  The oncology center said that they would
have to evaluate the paperwork from the vet and go through a triage
process, and may ask for a biopsy anyway, so it seems best to go with
the biopsy surgery which has already been scheduled for Thursday.  I'm
concerned about the amount of time it takes to get a result though,
since if it's an aggressive cancer, I would want the excision surgery
and treatment to begin as quickly as possible.

Except for the problem with her mouth, Betty has been very much
herself.  Now that I know that there is something wrong with her
mouth, I can see an increasingly pronounced dislocation of her jaw,
and a slightly bony projection on one side of her chin that's not on
the other side of her chin.  Whatever it is, it seems to be
progressing at a steady pace at this point.  I hope they can save or
reconstruct her lower jaw.

Thank you Karen, and everyone, for your thoughts.  I don't think that
it's too unfair - Betty's given me so much, and asked for so little,
so the time seems to have come for me to do my job as her guardian, to
take care of her and do everything I can for her.

Healing purrs in process for Betty and hopes that TED can help her.
I foster kittens and have found that with bad tasting medicine,
using a syringe (without the needle, of course) and pulling up the
medicine (such as 1cc) then also putting 1cc of water in the same
syringe dilutes the taste and seems to help them tolerate it better.

Ack... Much sympathy, Takayuki.  I hope the cancer can be cured.  Poor
Betty! They're such stoics, cats.  It's so hard to tell when they're at the
early stages of a serious ailment, as they behave  normally. The smallest
things can go unnoticed, even when they're very important clues.

Everyone's been so kind.  Thank you everyone!  Yes, I owe Betty to
RPCA.  Everyone was pushing me to go to a shelter, and then to adopt
the shy and dainty girlcat.

No gross metastasis was detected, so at this point, I'm pretty
optimistic about the cancer being treatable with surgery and chemo, if
it is cancer (vet says 90% sure it is).  Betty's getting her last meal
right now, since I'm not supposed to feed her after 8 pm, as she'll be
under general anesthesia for the biopsy.

Purrs that he's 10% wrong and or her cancer is treatable.
