HI ALL
My cat had cystitis which was treated by antibiotics, six months later she caught it again.
She now a couple of months down the road showing sings of it.
The last time she had it the vet said stress may bring it on and she was being hassled in the garden by another cat but that has now stopped.
My vet is abit reluctant to operate as my cat is at least 13 years old if not more.
My question is, is it fair to keep her on antibiotics ? surely as time goes by she will get used to them and they will not be effective.
I don't know...
THANKS
RICK

What kind of operation would be done? My old, old (20), but otherwise
healthy cat has cystitis almost constantly. She just got off Clavamox
10 days ago and now has it again, and is back on the antibiotic. 2 days
after ending a 10 days of Clavamox, a urine culture was negative.

i had a cat that went through the odd cystitis, the operatin my kitty
went through was for a tube so the fluid/puss could drain.
only discomfort she went rhough was that collar the vets use so the cat
can'nt get at the affected area.
i say discomfort cause kitty Really hated that collar.

13 is not too old to be operated on. I would recommend you find a second
opinion.

What sort of operation doe the vet want to do?
My cat has a tendency to feline idiopathic cystitis which
means there is no known cause . It can be managed with out
being on antibiotics all the time.

I live Stateside, and this may sound like an oversimplification, but I found
that when a particular cat has a tendency to reacquire cystitis it has been
due to the food s/he eats.
I have 25 inside cats and two who cannot tolerate OTC dry food or any canned
food that has an inordinate level of magnesium. The only OTC canned food I
feed is Friskies® Turkey 'n Giblets. A better choice is Friskies® Beef 'n
Liver, but it only comes in 5 ounce cans in my area (Houston TX). Both
those products are low mag, and apparently tasty.
The dry stuff is Science Diet (Hills®) from Pets Mart or Hills Prescription®
direct from the vet. I have been told that Hill's® is available European
markets.
My outside cats eat Purina Cat Chow, which is OTC, and I keep a close watch
on them to make sure none has adverse reactions from it. So far, none has.
It's a good, tasty product and high in protein and moderately low in
magnesium.
I learned long ago that by paying the premium for veterinarian approved cat
food I can avoid the cost of the doctor's exam room and the resulting
treatment.
Talk to your vet about what you are feeding the cat--especially with regard
to the magnesium level of the product.

Definately look at what she's eating. I've had good luck with my male cat
that had a urinary tract infection with Hill's Science Diet. He had the
infection 6 years ago and has never had it again since I put him on that
food; but I also give him the canned version every day too to get more water
into him and have a few water bowls around the house.
