HELP! my cat has been moving around the house with her newborns, as
expected, going from nest to nest. her latest spot is in my closet...on
top of the linen, it appears one of them has rolled off and to the side,
and she doesnt seem to want to go to it.  I have seen her nursing the
other three, has she rejected the one that fell to the wayside?  No-one in
the family has touched it...maybe she thinks someone has? I am worried
about the kitten.  i know if i touch it now, she will not go to it.
Unfortunatley my family and i are at work during the day so we cannot
nurse it to raise it ourselves, should I call the ASPCA to come rescue it
if she doesnt go to it?  This all happened at about 2:30  pm EST on Monday
11/14/05. PLEASE HELP

Try posting in rec.pets.cats.health+behav I think there are more
knowledgeable people posting there.

My hunch is that you should wash your hands as well as possible, then
gently place the kitten back with mom, but I'm no expert on very young
kittens.

Mother cats only spend time on kittens that can survive. Are you sure
the kitten is healthy?
If you have the mother's trust, you can touch and handle the kittens all
you want. I would start by putting the kitten back with its mother - if
she moves the kitten or installs the other kittens somewhere away from
this one kitten, I would take it as a sign that there is something wrong
with the kitten.

Hi, I have many cats and kittens, I've helped birth some of them. I picked
up the new kittens, many times, but only if neccessary. I don't think the
mother cat would mine if you put the kitten back with her, but don't wait
too long. Also she likes privacy for a while, She will put the kittens where
she wants them not where you would like them to be!LOL. Maybe she would like
a box or basket to put them in . in the closet. I would keep trying to get
her to accept the kitten. If your momma cat is a first timer, she may be
confused as to what to do.Don't force her to take the kitten, just put it
with her and walk away, don't stay to see if she does, or she may not.I'd
try this for a few days. Good Luck!!..Julie

What does your Vet say about what's been happening with the kitten who's
been left off to the side?

Call your Vet ASAP & tell them what's been going on between mom &
kittens before you call the ASPCA or anyone else.  They'll be able to
explain the family interaction you're seeing.

It could be something as simple as the kitten has been picked up a scent
from something in the closet that the mother is unsure of.
