My 14 year-old cat has been diagnosed with progressive degenerative
arthritis, and the vet has given me Metacam (NSAID) to use.  Apparently,
Metacam has only been cleared to use with dogs, but some vets are now
prescribing it for cats.  I have been told to use it only twice a week
since the cat live can't break it down as the dog liver can.  I am using
0.25 cc.  It SEEMS to help - he doesn't limp as much, but I may not be
that objective.  I am worried about damaging his liver.  Has anyone here
had any experience with using Metacam for cats.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks, Jeff

Metacam can be used for cats in a limited way. One or two drops a day is
the dosage - this should be safe for the liver.

Camilla,
Thanks for your quick reply.  I don't mean to be picky, but I use a
syringe to squirt the liquid into my cat's mouth, and it is marked by
percentage of cubic centimeter.  I am using 0.25 at this time.  My
question is: what would be one or two drops?  The liquid is very
viscous, and doesn't form drops.  It must be squirted into the mouth.

Thanks, again, Jeff

The bottle we get Metacam in in Denmark also has marks on it for dogs -
however the bottle can also squeeze out one drop at a time. The dig
dosage is definitely too much for a cat.

Jeff I was talking to my vet you have to be extremely careful with that drug
you need to keep an very close eye on the liver.  My vet has already had
some cats come in with liver failure that was on the drug  it was a long
recovery for them
