As a first time cat owner (I've had dogs all my life) I hoped this
newsgroup would provide some insight and discussion on how to care for
my new pet. Instead for the past week I've seen nothing but arrogant
a.sholes flaming each other. I especially single out Phil P. whose
arrogance, stupidity, and lack of common sense is astounding. I’d heard
for years that cat lovers are anal sh.ts. You guys prove it.

Some of us are here to help with our experience. What are your questions?

Thanks Camilla. My new pet is a 10 month old Tabby that I've had for
about six weeks. He seems comfortable with my two dogs now and spends
most of his day outside (he comes and goes throught the dog door). But
when he's home, he doesn't seem to want to play. I've tried several toys
but he is not interested.

I've had two suggestions from friends. One says give catnip a try. What
is catnip and what dies it do for cats?

The other suggestion is to get a second cat as a playmate. What do you
think?

Is your cat neutered? If not, it would be a good idea - he is now mature
and thinking of ladies only... When he comes home, he sleeps - he plays
when he is out.

Catnip is a plant - you can buy it dried in some pet stores. I am not
sure what catnip actually does for cats, but some cats get a real kick
out of it ;-)

Getting a second cat never hurts ;-) Cats communicate in ways we humans
cannot compete with - seeing two cats interact can be rather amazing.

Catnip basically gets cats high!  But, it only works on some cats.  My
deceased Kitty Litters LOVED it and couldn't stop eating it.  I tried
giving it to some of the others, but they weren't interested.

Maybe the reason the new cat isn't playing with the dogs is because he
is the bottom animal and intimidated by the dogs.  Give him some time.
You could be right about him playing outside though.
