i just got my kitten, Zelda a week ago.. (see "HELP ME I'M WORRIED" thread
for full details and understanding that i'm such a new mom and thought i knew
everything but i don't.) She was using her litterbox fine- except for peeing
in our bed twice after her first night at her new home- Understandable.. And
so i did the typical put her in her litter box thing and she eventually got
the hang of it.. today i started to worry because i noticed that there was
nothing in her litterbox yesterday and still nothing in there today.. i was
worried that she was constipated or had some sort of UTI.. but i figured i'd
give it until tomorrow and then i'd call the vet.. WELL! my boyfriend called
me at work with some silly news.. Zelda had been pooping in a potted tree in
the living room! at least 6 times! i mentioned in my other thread that her
paws smelled like dirt and i was worried she'd eaten a plant because she
threw up the night before.. can anyone tell me what to do with this? Maybe
she doesn't like the litter we use- it's compressed saw dust pellets and when
they get wet they turn into soft saw dust and move to the bottom of the tray..
it was recommended for kittens because it's all natural and doesn't stick to
their paws like clay does.. my living room is starting to smell.. i
understand that this is normal for kittens, any advice on how to train her to
use the box? it's also in the same room as her food and toys ( i know this is
not recommended, but i live in a small apartment and barely have a kitchen to
put her food in) her litterbox is very clean, i scooped it everytime i saw
something in it.. could this still be a problem? should i put the litterbox
in the bathroom? Now i'm afraid she won't be able to find where i've moved it.
. oh dear, i really thought i had it all down pat when i adopted the kitten..
there's so much more to having a cat than everyone thinks!

Cover the dirt with plastic wrap or aluminum foil, enough so she can't
access it.  Once removing the poop from the dirt, place it in the litterbox
instead of throwing it away.  That way, she will smell her poo in the
litterbox, and figure out that it's OK toi poo there as well.  Some cats
like to poo in one box, pee in another, so you might add another litterbox.
Gradually switch over to regular litter as she grows.  Hope This Helps.
