Hi folks. Our 10 year old cat was scratching his ear and it was staying
horizontal and was red and full of rusty colored stuff so we took him to our
vet we have been seeing for about 15 years. He does very good work. He
looked him over and said to leave him overnight so he could sedate and clean
up the infection. We went to pick him up the next day and the receptionist
gave us his medications and instructions and then the itemized bill of
$450.00!!!! We thought there was some mistake and asked to go over the bill
again, and she said that was the correct amount. She said the doc needed to
see him in 2 weeks for followup. We were shocked and we said we had been
good loyal clients and this bill was way over what we thought was reasonable
and to tear up our files and we would not return, ever!!We are hard working
people who are struggling with life's high expenses and we cherish our loyal
cats, but, come on, an ear infection on a cat, not a human being, being
price gouged. I realize vets study hard for their craft and they derserve
fair pay, but I am seeing vets in Los Angeles charging way, way too much for
their services. There are limits on what people can afford to pay to have
their cats serviced by vets. We need an answer. We are frustrated. I don't
have health insurance and have to go to clinics on a scale. Does anyone know
how we can get fair and resonable vet services we can afford?

You can look into pet health insurance..I checked out some sites and it was
about $250 to $300 a year..I think this includes an annual checkup..Type in
"Pet health insurance" (remember to include quotation marks) into Google,
and a few websites will come up..

My cat has a liver tumor, already it's cost me $300 for exam/blood tests,
$300 sonogram, and $300 biopsy. However, before last year I had not brought
the cat in for 10 years! Surgery could be another $1000.

Well, it's not like I have to send the kitty to college (yet)

Hi David. I sympathize about your cats condition. I know this medical care
is expensive and I feel it's way too expensive!! Vets don't pay malpractice
insurance and that's why I think they should not charge so much. Just MHO.I
will look into pet health insurance, but in the past I looked into it and
older cats were not eligible.

Find a vet outside of the city? I'm not in the US so I don't know what it's
like there, but here in Canada the smaller, out of town hospitals charge
less than the larger ones in town.
