My 21 yr old cat I've had since he was a kitten is missing and presumed
dead.  He's deaf and can hardly walk so I am totally bewildered as to
where he could be!  We searched everywhere... under houses... under
decks... wood piles... bushes, trees, garages, tires... everywhere!  Any
suggestions as to where to look or to how to let go?  I'm so overwhelmed
by his being cold and alone and not with me... its been 4 days and I can't
sleep!  Help would be so appreciated!

Make up leaflets and post them through everyones door in the
neigbourhood, put up posters.  Phone the
local vet and rescue centre.  Try the local radio station. I have got
two cats back this way.  Dont give up
yet.  Good luck.

How do you call a deaf cat? It doesn't matter, he won't come any way.

Cats are very clever about hiding, especially if they're not feeling well
or simply don't want to be found. You can try scent trails/beacons -- such
as unwashed clothing placed at various intervals out from your house, and
walking barefoot out from the house in a spoke pattern. Whether or not
this is practical depends on your current climatic conditions. (Barefoot
with snow on the ground isn't terribly comfortable.)

When my boy got away several years ago, these techniques may have been
what finally got him back after nearly a week (which lots of searching and
calling over those days); hard to know for sure. But it was a day after
attaching socks to the backyard fence and walking 1/4-1/2 mile spokes
barefoot from the house that got him to reappear. (And yes, that walking
was rather painful.)

Good luck,
Frank

I had a missing cat as well awhile back.  I rounded up all the kids in the
neighborhood and offered a large reward for anyone that found the cat.
Those kids spent two days going all over looking for him.  Kids are
motivated by money to buy games, etc.  and really threw themselves into
it.  My cat was spotted up in a tree by a little girl.  Don't give up, I
know it's hard.  I could not sleep either.
