These are the two breeds I am most interested in. Very similar cats in
terms of appearance and (on paper) personality. I'm looking for
anyone who actually has one or the other for first-hand feedback
before I take the plunge. There aren't too many breeders around that
have them and most of the breeders are more interested in marketting
the cats rather than actual talk of living with them. Any help is
appreciated. :)

I had a Maine Coon when I was growing up. He wasn't from a breeder, but
we were pretty sure he was near enough to 100%. Still, he didn't have
papers or anything, so he may not have been precisely illustrative of the
breed. But he was a great cat, in all senses of the word -- terrific
personality and *big.* He was affectionate and playful, energetic, and
could get pretty aggressive. When he got that certain glimmer in his
eyes, my dad would get out the work gloves and really tangle with him.
The gloves were essential to prevent too much blood loss. :-) He was
strong and liked to play rough, when it was appropriate. But he was also
very good at picking up on when it was not appropriate. His
aggressiveness was never a problem. He was an indoor/outdoor cat, and I
don't know whether keeping him strictly as an indoor cat would have worked
out as well. He liked to roam, a lot, and I'm sure he burned off a lot of
energy keeping the neighborhood critters in line. (He certainly kept the
neighbor's half-Golden/half-mutt in line.) He was definitely a scrapper
and would sometimes come home with the scratches to prove it, not to
mention other little surprises. He brought home a bat once -- I
thought that was cool, but my mom wasn't thrilled.
We moved with him three times and he had no adjustment problems. He
even seemed to enjoy the road trips when we moved from California to
Texas and back again two years later. He had no attitude or behavioral
problems of any kind, and no health problems until he got diabetes. He
only lived 12 years, which seemed like a long time to me (I was only six
when we got him) back then.
Sorry I can't offer more expert advice. I'd check into how they do as
indoor cats if you are planning on keeping your cat indoors. That would
be my only hesitation about getting a Maine Coon now, since I live in the
city. My cat now (she's 15) is about 1/3 the size and doesn't even like
to venture into the apartment building's hallway. :-)

Michael,
Thank you very much for your reply as it does answer a few of the
things I'm looking into. While I'm in an apartment for now that will
be changing reasonably soon and will allow plenty of roaming room.
<grin> Sounds like the personality is in line with what I'm looking
for. Flops when appropriate, pounces the rest of the time! The
longer age is a good thing. My last cat lasted 22 years before the
warranty went out pretty suddenly but needless to say he had an
excellent life and pretty much ran the place.
Also the adaptability to change as they get older is good (hinted at
by your not having any problems over a few moves). I'm looking for an
older cat (3 years or older if possible) so that would help.
Thanks again, the information is going to be saved. :)

I had a half Maine Coon girl for many (20) years and she was so
wonderful that when it came time to get another cat, I got my first
ever pure-bred, a Maine Coon.
I've got a Maine Coon boy and he is just perfect. Very loving, loves
to be picked up and cuddled like a baby, very polite to visitors,
plays like a kitten when desired and is mostly like a living giant
teddy bear the rest of the time. He talks a LOT, looks at me so
adoringly, and seems very attuned to what I'm feeling.
I was in a road traffic accident 4 months ago and when I came home
from hospital, my crutches initially scared him, but he got used to
them very quickly. He is always very careful to not get in the way of
them and walks very slowly with me around the house so I don't get
left alone. He's also very careful to avoid my owie leg. He even
likes to get belly rubs from a crutch when I'm sitting down!
Min is an indoor cat, he only goes out in our garden under
supervision, and he seems perfectly happy with that arrangement. We
do have a large cat tree (made from an actual tree with actual bark)
for him to scratch on and various other scratchy mats and tons of toys
to keep him occupied.
I would have to say that, for me, Maine Coons are the perfect cat.
