There are special dry cat foods to help with the hairball problem.
You might find one at the supermarket.

Because when they lick themselves they swallow all that hair.

I keep a container of wheat grass growing by a window. My cat eats the
wheat grass and this keeps her bowels working properly and she passes
the hair with her feces. She is an indoor cat that never goes outside.

Go to a pet store or Wal-mart, K-mart whatever and buy a tube of
hairball remedy.  Works really well.  Give it to your cat once daily.
It says on the box to then give it once weekly, but I give it to my
cats everyday.  I just put it in their food (canned).  You can also
put it on their paw, but mine just fling it off across the room and
walk away.  I have to put it in their food.  It works wonders.

Sew their mouths shut so they can't lick themselves.
As thats the only way.
