How old until cats can be let out?

How old should cats be before you let them outside?  (Let's try to
keep this thread away from the "it's abuse to let a cat outside"
camp.)

My kittens are usually born outside (the momma gets very wary when
she's pregnant).  So, my kittens are outside all the time (except when
they come in to run at full speed all over the house and drive me
crazy)!.

I don't really think that this matters. However I do believe that during the
first length of  time of letting a cat out that they should go with
supervision to ensure that they learn where "home" is.
