Go to http://www.petfinder.com They have a lot of information about
cats and there are several links that will help you gather information
about different breeds.

Many cities, in most counties, have shelters where you can adopt a cat
or other pet. The advantage of a shelter animal is that in many
shelters the pets have been given medical exams and checked to make
sure they are emotionally fit for a new home. This gives you a better
chance at finding a good pet.

The people at the shelter might also have information for you. Beware
that the people at some shelters are VERY intense. They believe that
their point of view is the ONLY correct one and they are there to
force people to conform to their ideals. If you find that, try another
shelter, you should not be treated like a criminal for wanting to
adopt a pet.

There are also several newsgroups that can help you
rec.pets.cat.announce has some FAQs that will be of interest to you.

Also, consider getting two cats so they can keep each other company
while you are gone.

This is an excellent idea.  I just adopted two kittens from the same litter,
and they keep each other quite happy.  I think it is healthier for them as
well, altho' I could just be projecting my human socialization onto katz...

I do not think you are simply projecting human traits onto animals. My
observations have shown me that what the experts say is true. Cats are
more happy when they have another cat as a companian.

While they sometimes bond with other animals, including humans, they
seem to find a special bond with their own kind. The best combination
seems to be when they have loving humans AND another feline.

It is also nice to have a canine around, just to take the blame for
broken things and disappearing food  :-)

The best advise I could give would be to get the cat from an animal
shelter rather than a pet store or news paper ad
