I already have a cat, she's 9 month old....she's a very good cat, she loves
everybody, she's very affectionate and very social.  I want a second cat,
but I'm not sure if I should have another female or a male.   I don't want
my cat "to mate"...... I just want a friend for Mimine.

Any experiences or advice would help...

Thanks

Karine

That's not the point!!!!!!  She is spayed and the other (future) cat will be
fixed or
spayed....

First - thanks for clarifying she was fixed, and possible future one will be
as well.

Second - male cats are usually more affectionate than females for some
reason. You can introduce another cat to this one - there may be some
hissing/growling the first few weeks until they get used to one another.
Whenever inroducing any new animal to a house, you should do so gradually.
Keep new pet confined in one room for a few days, then switch - let new pet
wonder around while the other cat is in the new cats room.  This allows them
to get used to the smell of one another.  Gradually start to introduce them
to one another, supervised.

I foster, and have a revolving door of cat sometimes.  Some of mine are
immediately accepting, others take months to get acquainted.  Just shower
both with plenty of attention during the adjustment time.

Hi Kgirl,

We have 3 cats now, and have had as many as 8 at one time.
When we add new cats, we try to make sure that there are pairs of same
sex cats (as close as we can get). It has been our experience that
cats make "friends" with others of the same sex more readily. Get
another female for now.  They also do better if more cats are added
while the one(s) you already have are younger. This doesn't mean you
won't have success adding different aged or sexed cats, but I would go
with another female kitten... Hope that helps... ~Ed~
