What's the simple truth here?

The brands like Advantage et al from the vets are quite a bit more
expensive.

Then there's the brands at the stores like Hartz et al. I 'think' they
have the same active ingredients but I don't know for sure.

Are the vet brands better? That much better and worth the added
expense? Or not?

thanks!

PS: also how do drops rank compared to the other remedies such as:
a) sprays
b) powders
c) collars

There is another method to consider.  Buy a flea comb and groom the pet with it
rather than exposing them to nasty chemicals with unknown longterm effects.

How gentle is Advantage on my pet?
Advantage is backed by extensive and thorough domestic animal safety studies
that show even when administered at five times the target therapeutic dosage
for three consecutive days, cats and dogs experienced no adverse effects4.
If you apply as recommended, you can be confident of the gentleness of
Advantage on your pet.

Why do you state that it's unknown what long term effects these chemicals
have on animals? Would most vets be selling the product if they thought it
harmed animals?

I'll have to pass on that option too. The other question is how much
time one has. Perhaps I'm just a lazy irresponsible pet owner but I
simply don't have that kind of time to spare. Maybe I should be upon
the pillar of shame but I'll stick w/ the modern convenience of
something like an effective flea drop... :)
