will my cat starve to death?

My cat just got over a urinary tract episode and the Vet gave her a
prescription cat food to eat.  The cat refuses to eat the food.  The Vet
told me to try phasing it in by mixing it with the old cat food.  No dice.
My cat works around every morsel and touches none of the prescription food.
So on Friday I had enough and figured the only way to get her going on the
Vet's food was to simply leave it out exclusively.  I figure she will eat it
when she is hungry enough.  Well now I'm not sure.  It has been two days now
and the cat won't eat the food.  She looks at the bowl and comes to me and
says "Listen jerk bring back my old food, this stuff smells like horse crap"
I don't know if I am losing sleep over nothing.  Will my cat seriously
starve herself to death while looking at a full bowl of food?  Or will she
eat the Vet's food when her hunger desire defeats her fear, attitude, or
whatever feelings she has toward the new food?  I still have all day to go
today (Sunday) and I can call the Vet tomorrow.  Anybody here ever go
through this experience?  Thanks for any input.

Take your cat to the Vet.  Cats that decide that they don't want to eat
something in particular will starve themselves to death rather than eat it.

Is this a diet to prevent crystal formation in the urine?  I have a decent
amount of experience with this.  At any rate, the vet may only carry one
brand of prescription food, but that doesn't mean that others exist.  Call
around to other vets to see what they sell, and have your vet give
permission (fax a prescription, or something) for you to buy food elsewhere.
Be adamant if necessary - I don't know what your relationship or your
perception of your vet it like, so obviously consider that.  I changed vets
a few years ago due to inflexibility and possible incompetence of one clinic
when my cat was having trouble with struvite crystals.  Also, my cat would
only eat one or two of the kinds of prescription food and couldn't keep one
of those down!  (Feel free to email me if that's the urinary problem at
issue and if you want to know more about what kinds of food choices there
are.)

Cheers,
Rebecca

I had the same problem and went back to the vet to try and get some food she
would eat.

I don't know if you get it there but he gave me a vetinary food called
Feline i/d.  It's made by Hills and can only be bought from the vet.  She
LOVES it and now I'm having problems weening her off it, even though she's
better!

It's made in the USA but I'm in the UK

Good luck...

Hi.. Hopefully your cat is eating by now. We did the same thing last
year when thyroid problems in two of ourthree cats prompted the vewt
to recommend a low allergen diet. They hate the food, but eventually
got to eating it... It took a couple weeks for them to resume eating
anywhere near the amount they used to. They are at healthier weights
now. We give them a "treat" twice a week, which is the wet version of
the low allergen food. This they love, but wet food is NOT healthy as
the main source for food. Occasionally, if they are eating enough of
the dry food, we might give them some "people" food that fits low
allergen criteria, such as boiled turkey, which they love. Hope things
are going well for you and yours... BB, ~Ed~
