My cat is 18yo and dying.... the vet says he is in no pain, but he has now
stopped eating and drinking, after tests he said his kidneys are
malfunctions and blood tests showed Urea levels off the scale. He has tried
to re-hydrate him, but it has had no effect. He has stopped his toilet
functions and he is so weak he cant get up. We are giving him love and care
in his last few days (hours?) He is being kept warm and comfortable, we talk
to him a lot, stroke him, we think he can hear us, but his eyes are
unresponsive. We don't have the courage (or cowardice) to have him put to
sleep (if he was in pain our decision would probably be different though).

We (me and my family) cannot live without a cat in our lives..... please can
someone in my region suggest local cat homing/rescue centres where we can
look to replace him once he has gone. Right now, as I type this, I feel I am
being disloyal to my cat in his final hours, but the thoughts of not having
a cat in the house would be unbearable. I am about to lose a member of the
family, maybe we should have a grieving period and not rush into things, but
it isn't like that. The house would be empty with him or his successor.
A kitten, or young cat are the options...preferably a male tabby (the black,
brown, grey type of tabby as opposed to ginger, for example).

Hope that made sense. I know, from reading the NG there are obviously lots
of genuine cat lovers out there. So I hope you understand my request.

thanks in advance

Hi,

I am sorry to hear that your cat is not in the best of health. He sounds
like that he has a wonderful family who care about him and love him.

I moved from Manchester some years ago so I am a little out of date with
information, however the nice people at cats protection may be of assistance
or at least have details of somewhere locally to yourself.

Good luck in finding a feline family member and don't think that you are
being disloyal, you are not. I can totally understand your feelings as I
could not survive without our cat.

Best wishes

Thanks for the info Sean.

Our cat passed quietly away at 230 this morning, I was with him at the end
and thankfully it was very peaceful, but very moving.
Today the pain has started for my family, not just with the loss of a
faithful friend, but with the house feeling so empty. But we will commence
our search.

Thanks again.
