kitten abandonment

hope someone can help me. i have a cat who adopted me... she was wild
before she came into my life. she recently had kittens, but elected to
have them outdoors. when the rains came, she moved them into the house (at
4AM, no less!), and i spent several hours drying off a very wet,
bedraggled litter. there were seven kittens in total. they are nearing
weaning age (6 weeks, unless i'm mistaken.) yesterday, my wife and i spent
the night with some friends, and when we returned today, we found our cat
and all but one of the kittens gone.
can anyone give me a possible reason for this? we've been home for hours
and there's been no sign of the cat and her brood. the one remaining
kitten is very bewildered and seems lonely. we have successfully fed it
some solid food, so we know it will survive, but i'm worried that our cat
will return and make off with the remaining kitten. any advice would be
greatly appreciated.

First question I'd ask is, "Who else has access to your house?"

If you don't have a pet door, she has moved them.

Good luck. Allison

no one but us... i can safely rule that option out.

Out of instinct, cats will move their litters for protection.

She's got them hidden somplace.

Your return home probably interupted the relocation.

Why? At the age of 6 weeks, a kitten should still be with his/her mom!
Besides, if she's hiding the brood in the house - they're all safe.

well, the thing is, our cat has had a litter before, and she moved them
outside too. we never saw them again. like i said in my original post,
she's a wild cat, so her motivation was possibly to get her brood away
from humans. she is definitely not in the house, as i stay in a tiny
little apartment, and we'd have found her easily if she was inside. the
apartment is on a smallholding, though, so there's any number of places
for her to take the kittens... hang on, mommy cat has just returned, sans
kittens. if she tries to take the one remaining kitten, i'll follow her
and see if i can find her hiding place. like i said, she's abandoned
litters outside before, so i am loath to just let her get on with it. the
last time this happened, she moved the kittens outside, and then came back
inside and didn't go and check on them at all... we couldn't find them,
and never saw them again. if anyone has any other advice based on what has
just happened, and what i've said about her previous litter, i'd
appreciate it. for those who have already offered advice, thank you, and i
will keep you posted.

You say the cat may return and make off with the remaining kitten, well it
is hers....

Why oh why haven't you gotten this cat spayed???  How many kittens will be
"lost" before she is finally spayed?  Borrow or rent a cat trap, if you
can't catch her, and get her in to a vet.
