a few months ago some nice person dropped off a cat in my neighborhood.
We have taken it in. We think it is a female but not sure. Do female cat
spray. We are still in the stage of making friends.
Thank you very much

They can, especially if they're not spayed. She may be going into heat and
advertising for a male. Which means you'd better accelerate that friendship
ASAP and get her into the vet to be fixed, or you may be dealing with 4-8
more cats by summer time. If you dont think you'll be able to lay hands on
her easy enough to be able to put her in a carrier, you can try a humane
trap. Our Humane Society usually lends ours out for a deposit, so you might
check with organizations close to you to see what they can do to help you.

Thank you very much for the information

If the cat is spraying, you've got a boy. Take him to the vet and get
him neutered. As always, thank you for giving him a home.

I've seen females spray too.

Moronic posting style corrected. You have not been charged for this
service but I reserve the right to charge in the future if you make
the same mistake again.

Not necessarily.

That may reduce spraying in a male cat, it will not eliminate it -
even neutered females will sometimes spay on the boarders of their
territory.

I have seen castrated cats spraying, too.
I have a netered Female who is about 7 years old and she sprays.
Mostly on the guest chairs & guests but cats do as cats will.

Female cats do not spray so if the cat is spraying then it is definitely a boy.

If you do a web search on the topic, you will see that female cats do in
fact spray.
The op should have the cat sexed and then determine the reason for the
spraying.

Anything on the ground is a cat toy. Anything not there yet, will be.

My female spayed cat sprays. Her favorite spot was always up on the kitchen
counter and aims for the toaster. I don't know why, but I could NOT get her
to stop. Pepper didn't work, vinegar didn't work, ammonia didn't work.
Ironically enough, I just moved to a new apartment and she hasn't sprayed
"yet". We shall see!

If a cat sprays indoors, which after all to them it is their den, then
there is usually something wrong with the cat.
Outside, to mark their territorial boundary, fine. But when they come
in and do it then I would seek help from your vet.
