Tortie is recovering, but having trouble accepting the new diet that is
supposed to dissolve the crystals. I know he will survive, but unless he
gets over being so stubborn, he will probably be a very skinny cat.

Wish I could offer helpful tips to get him to eat the new food, but I
haven't had very good luck with such a thing: when Archie was given a
special diet about a year ago to get him to lose weight, he just
wouldn't eat it.  It was dry food, and no matter how carefully I mixed
it in with his favorite dry food, he would eat around it -- quite a
feat when one considers they can't see what they're eating when
they're eating.  Fortunately, he's less picky about the wet food and
is now getting back in shape again eating the "Seniors" wet food
formulation.

? whether this dry food/wet food thing might help Tortie.  Glad to
hear he's doing better, though.

What did your vet recommend?  Did he/she give multiple options regarding
both brands and types of food?  Which type(s) of crystals were found?  If
your vet only sells one or two brands of appropriate rx food and your cat
just won't eat it, you should be communicating with the vet about this and
ask if he/she can get samples of other brands from another vet in the area.
As I emailed you before, my cat just would not touch the wet food - it was
in a gel form.  He ate any of the dry foods but could not keep the Hill's
dry food down, and he has been successful with Waltham S/O dry.  There is
also a semi-moist food, something like Tender Vittles, which I believe is
made by Purina (still Rx).

Hope Tortie finds something he likes!
Cheers,
Rebecca

It was the Hill's that Archie wouldn't eat.  I didn't know there were
alternatives.  It's not needed right at the moment here, but will file
that information for the future.  Thanks, Rebecca.

Barb and Rebecca in particular
thanks for your concerns.
I have tried mixing the new dry with the old dry. the new dry with new wet.
old dry with new wet. Even drizzled tuna juice on new dry. then combined
tuna with new wet. No Go.
He has the oxala crystals and cystisis. Using antibiotics now and trying to
get past the food problem. The vet seems to think he will get hungry enough
to eat eventually.
Will be seeing a new vet soon probably.
thanks,

Hey, al --

It's not impossible -- Archie's very stubborn, and I once thought I'd
never get him off Fancy Feast wet food, let alone to a jellied food
and then to senior stuff, but he didn't put up much of a fuss after
not eating for a few days due to tummy trouble.  Just eased him in to
it gently, starting with a tbsp of the jellied stuff at a time.  He
didn't fuss at it all and eats it eagerly now.  But I've read in some
sources that cats will starve if they don't like a food.

I never did try eliminating all his food for a day and then just
giving him the Hill's, so I don't know if he would have eaten it with
that sort of "tough love" approach (g).  Good luck, and let us know,
please, how it goes.
