Hey
a question to all cat lovers

Do you think that it is bad for a cat to live most its live inside allthough
it?s mostly an outside animal.
We?ve got a cat that is 3 years old and she?s lived her whole live inside.
We walk her about 5 to 6 times a day and she seems happy.
We live in an apartment in an area that don?t allow free cats outside.
What do you Think?

Where I live in the High Mojave Desert, any outdoors cat becomes part of the
food chain on the bottem side. I've always kept my cats indoors and they have
been happy, they have food, litter, toys, and don't worry about becoming foor,
or someone shooting at them, or cars/trucks running over them. Plus most my cats
are Japanese Bobtails, I.E. Show Cats.

It is really simple. If you live in an area where, for whatever
reason, you feel unable to allow a healthy cat its freedom to roam for
at least some time each day (and only you can judge your area) then
don't have a cat.

To have a healthy cat, knowing you will keep it in 24/7 marks you are
being cruel, selfish, or both.

Now which applies in YOUR case?

Very bad.

None of the UK's major shelters, nor most of the smaller ones that for
various reasons affiliate with the big boys, will normally rehome a
healthy cat to an indoor only environment.

So what's your advice for those of us that live in an urban setting where
it's illegal to leave a cat outside, off harness, for any length of time? I
should buy a house with a fenced yard? Or is the fenced yard cruel, too? I
should move out into the country so my girls can have free roam of vast
acreage? I should give them to someone who has vast acreage on which they
can roam?

Do tell.

In my country, where we have one of the highest densities of both
humans and cats, it is illegal to ill treat animals.

A cage is a gage - no matter how large you make it.

Yes, preventing a cat from having the freedom to roam and socialize
with other cats is cruel.

I live in a city, in fact most people in the UK do, and yet none of
the UK's major shelters (nor most of the smaller ones for that mater)
will normally rehome a healthy cat to an indoor only environment.

Bob, you are so full of sh.t. I've had cats all of my life also. A cat
that is kept inside only will outlive any outdoor cat and be just as
happy. I currently have 4 cats. They are just as happy as they can be.
They are 12 years, 10 years, 2 years and 6 months. My Vet thinks it is
cruel to let a cat outside. By doing so, you are taking away many
years of it's life and exposing it to more risks and danger than any
pet should have to be.

The FACT is that none of the UK's major shelters, nor most of the
smaller ones that for various reasons affiliate with the big boys,
will normally rehome a healthy cat to an indoor only environment. This
has been confirmed on numerous occasions by people who work at the
grass roots level - actually finding homes for cats.
