Each could do harm to the other. Rabbits have powerful hind legs. On
the other hand, we have a stray mother cat who has taken up residence
in our barn. She catches and kills adult wild rabbits and brings them
for her kittens.

Exactly! Cat will eventually not only hurt rabbits, it'll kill them - just
for fun! Cat need not to be hungry to kill. Although, if you spend enough
time with all of them together, if you show your cat you protect rabbits and
she's not allowed to hurt them, providing your cat's position in the
household being 'kitten', not 'mother of the house', you can succeed.
