I have read many sites that suggest a cat carrier.  Has anyone tried putting
the cat in a soft, thin pillowcase and held it on your lap?

Bad idea.

The cat's claws would penetrate the pillowcase and your lap.

Trust me, Snapper is correct.  It's also against the law in some U.S.
States.  You can easily buy a cat carrier at Petco or PetsMart for
easily under $20.00.  Some humane shelters lend them out when picking up
your friend.  My shelter did five years ago, I still have my friend and
carrier.  It's also a good safe haven for my friend and storm shelter
from lightning, thunder and fireworks.

You would be asking for some war wounds if anything happens   plus  it could
be against the law depending on your area.

I got a nice carrier from Wal-Mart  medium / large size for about 20.  It
has a place on top that you can lock the seat belt into

God forbid you have an accident and the furball gets out or worse hurt from
nor being properly restrained.  I know I would never be able to forgive
myself

If you're in the UK that is completely illegal, not to mention dangerous and
stupid!
