Hey everyone

I have a 2.5 year old cat that I got towards the end of college.
During school it was great because we had a house of 6 and there was
always someone home to keep the cat company.  Now I've graduated and
brought the cat home with me, but my family is out of the house most
of the day for work/school/summercamp, etc.  Up til now, my brother
has been at home but now he's started summercamp 9-5 every day.

I'm worried my cat will take the suddenly empty house badly and will
be lonely as she's still young and likes to play all day.  Is there
anything I can do to make it less lonely for her?  I thought of
turning on a radio/tv for some noise, but I don't know if it will even
mean anything.  Any thoughts?  We dont' have any other pets for her to
interact with.

Just offhand, I'd suggest you do yourself, your girl cat, and your
local Humane Society a favor and adopt her an adult boy cat. Yes,
there will be jealousy/adjustment issues, but if you put the boy cat
in his own room with food, water, litterbox, and toys, and brush them
both with the same brush until they get used to each other's scents,
you may very well have created a new friendship for your companion as
well as giving a loving home to one who is in desperate need. Think
about it. K? Thanks!

I thought about adopting another cat for a companionship.  I don't
know if my parents would go for having another cat though.  They'd...
actually probably be pretty pissed about it.

Any suggestions for what to do if getting another cat isn't an option?

Well, I'd discuss it with them first. If they can tolerate one cat,
why not two? Be proactive in your argument for another cat. They might
even like the idea, as long as you are prepared to take care of the
food and litterbox issues that might arise.

If they are dead set against another cat, the best I can suggest is
getting her a whole bunch of new stuffed toys and maybe a live catnip
plant. After all, cats supposedly sleep 80% of the time.

I hope you can come to reconcile this situation, My two love to run
the Cat-Daytona 500 between 2 and 3 AM. I have all oak floors so they
can deliberately get my attention (thump, gallop, thump, gallop,
thump) before I have to wake up to go to work. Otherwise, they are
very happy.

I hope you find a good solution to your lonely lady.

Regards.
